This is a short email trail that started when an American friend enquired about how my family and i were faring with the firestorms here.
[I][I][I][I]Sorry to hear this. It is the same here, especially in California, where burn bans have had catastrophic results. All due to bans on logging and a new generation not understanding the laws of nature. And as you stated, a media (all of them) preaching negative news with no backing that the end of the world is near and it is all our fault. What happened to real science and real news? I only hope there are enough of us left with an objective view and the optimism necessary to continue to make this the great life I have had the opportunity to live. Our thoughts are with you and your country. (My Michigan based friend)

It’s as bad as it’s ever been B**** but this is Australia. It’s always been the driest continent on the planet. We have such fires every summer, the indigenous trees have evolved so that they don’t actually propagate without intense climactic heat!
Our problems arise because the government bows to the wishes of loud urban based media-fed groups which campaign against the periodical controlled burns. These burns have been carried out by first peoples for over 60,000 years until this last 150 years, they reduce the fuel load, they replenish the bush and they fertilise the ground.
The worst fires are today in those places where burn-offs haven’t been allowed.
The closest one of these is 50miles away from here but we have the smoke.

Hi Richard, I actually think it's far from 'par for the course'. I think that we weren't as prepared as we could have been, but with all due respect a lot of blame lays at the hands of the federal government who ignored lobbying groups and fire and emergency service meetings that were requested throughout 2019. They knew this was coming. Myself, I haven't heard of any Urban or environmental group challenging backburning but that would be a big shame if they did
Excuse the political overtones & comparisons, only thing I could find on short notice.
Its so many fires it would make you think they were intentionally set..

Nearly 200 People Arrested Across Australia For Deliberately Starting Bushfires
Police are now working on the premise arson is to blame for much of the devastation caused this bushfire season. A strike force will investigate whether blazes were deliberately lit, and bring those responsible to justice.

(Just an FYI. this somewhat renegade guy references Brisbane times which then references Murdoch News, which is of course a complete contradictory mess. They label someone being questioned 'arrested')
But yes, it's a problem and it blows my mind, especially when they are in the fire department
Thanks for your response mate. You're right of course but I know that there are groups who actively campaign against controlled burns and many local councils bow to their influence and create such bureaucratic restrictions as to make the firies efforts for fuel reduction very difficult. Having said that, I heard a segment on ABC Radio 774 today where it was proposed that fuel reduction had little or no effect in fires that were in the upper 50% or fire severity as shown by the experience of the 2009 fires, so who knows?
