Sydney is named the second healthiest city in the world behind Amsterdam as Melbourne comes in at number 11

Sydney has been ranked the second healthiest city in the world according to a new report.

The rankings were based on an analysis of ten healthy living metrics including sunshine hours, happiness levels, average number of working hours and outdoor activities.

Among the 44 cities ranked Amsterdam topped the list, with Sydney second and Melbourne coming in at number 11.

he Healthy Lifestyles Cities Report also took into account the cost of a bottle of water, obesity levels of the country, life expectancy, air and water quality, number of takeaway restaurants and costs of a monthly gym membership.

Residents of Amsterdam have access to more than 400 outdoor activities, while the Netherlands ranked the fifth happiest country in the world, as well as the sixth best country in Europe for obesity levels at just 20.4 per cent.

In Sydney it was the city's sunshine hours and the abundance of outdoor activities available to residents that saw it rank second.

Sydneysiders enjoy 2,636 hours of sunshine per year and and work an average of 1,712 hours per year - almost 33 per week.

With happiness levels of 7.22/10 and 406 outdoor activities, Sydneysiders have a life expectancy of 82.1.

Austrian capital Vienna came in third, with a pollution index score of 17.33 out of 100, one of the lowest of all.

That is over four times lower than Beijing's pollution score of 85.43 and three times lower than London, Paris and Barcelona.

Melbourne was the only other Australian city on the list and came in at 11th place with the same happiness and life expectancy as Sydney residents, but had less hours of sunshine (2,363) and only 243 outdoor activities.

Seven of the top ten healthiest cities were located in Europe, with three of those Scandinavian cities, including Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki.

The lowest ranked cities were New York, Moscow and Mexico City which were let down by factors like pollution and the average amount of hours worked.

I find it ironic that the only US cities are extremely liberal. Ive been in 3 of the 5, and I wouldn't say they are healthy at all.

In my own opinion, there a a lot of cities on that list that should not be in a ranking of healthy and livable cities.....
