Ouch. Merry xmas to the HVAC guy. He couldn't get it running?
I picked up one of these a couple years ago in case of emergency, Holds a 20# propane tank, the little thing cranks out the heat and will quickly raise the temp of my whole house!

We already had some space heaters from last year when we had problems with the furnace the first time. Had a similar issue last year and the people we called at the time replaced the control board in the furnace. That set us back a grand. Then the furnace just started acting up more and more this winter and finally it quit. Called a different HVAC company and the tech on Friday basically told us we got ripped off last year. They didn't put in an OEM control board, it was some 'universal' crappy replacement board. And of course they didn't leave the book that goes with that board. The furnace was having multiple issues and he went down all the things he could try, but it just kept turning into throwing away money at the old furnace. So just bit the bullet and scraped up the money and told them to replace it. They were back first thing the next morning and they were in and out in under 2 hours. Now we have a 70,000 BTU Rheem and it has 1 year warranty on labor and 10 years on parts. So we should not have to worry about heat anymore for awhile.

Yea, sounds like you got a shady guy the first time. Last I had a guy out he told me my furnace was "condemned" He could "tell" be the sound of it. I threw him out of my house, googled the model and ended up pulling the flame sensor out, cleaning it with a scuff pad and putting it back in. That was two years ago and it's still working fine. Some of those companies are just scam artists.

On this furnace, the igniter would only come on maybe once out of every 10 times, then even when it did come on, it wouldn't fire, there were a few other problems he listed but said we would most likely be spending almost as much to repair the old one as we would to just get a new one.

Yea, once the guy put the shit board in it, it was all downhill. No way to tell what's really wrong with it... Is it the igniter or board? flame sensor or board? etc. Only way to know would have been to throw parts at it. Unfortunately for you and your wallet you did the best thing you could.
Just heard from my auntie, my uncle had a tear in his esophagus which they've now managed to glue. He needed 8 units of blood during the night Not fully out of the woods yet but definitely looking a lot better than it was yesterday

Exactly, and that's what the tech said on Friday. He could replace the board with the correct one, but that wouldn't necessarily solve the problem. And in his opinion, at that point it would just be better to replace it. And he wasn't doing it in a high pressure sell kind of way, he would go any way we wanted to, but after him listing everything that could be wrong and not even knowing what the problem was without starting by replacing the board, we could just be chasing out tail.
