And just to show that appearance doesn't mean anything, all of these below are .22 semi-auto rifles.

You can give almost any rifle a 'military style' appearance.

The bottom one still looks like a jazzed up large pistol to me. Not much to the AR-15 (am I still allowed to call it that is does it go by another name?)

Very informative comparison Pony on optics...do I dare ask why the need to have a semi auto rifle in general? I won't.

point made - top one looks like a hunting rifle my Uncle has, bottom one looks like a weapon used in school shootings....

Sure, it's a general term to describe the style of weapon. Much preferred to calling it an "assault rifle".

And you're welcome, being educated on a subject makes for a much better debate! There isn't much that gets us pro gun people fired up quicker than all the misinformation constantly being reported and repeated as facts.

I did enjoy our discussion yesterday, if the people of this country could sit down and have a conversation not based on emotions we would be a lot closer to finding some common ground on the subject.

I hate the discussion to be frank...but I do feel it has to occur and changes have to be made.

Not sure why, but the Vegas shooting and this recent Florida one really upset me. Maybe it's because there's more immediate media available.

There's a lot to look at in terms of prevention and I'm a believer in looking at every aspect. To say that gun control isn't part of the problem is like saying mental health isn't part of the problem. Both sides of the discussion need to accept and realize that one talking point won't solve everything.

I saw a post listing shootings from Columbine to present day with death counts for the incidents. It's a chilling graphic because overall, there is escalation.

And I strongly think that when we're aware of such an obvious problem, those instances should be dropping, not ramping up. We're better than this and should be able to get that shit under control. Perhaps we have to stop being so sensitive and say - That incident counts toward a mental problem, you don't get the privilege to own a gun. But then you get into the inevitable argument about thought policing and rights and it never ends. The argument is circular. We can't do that...because then this may happen. Gotta decide at one point...which is worse? This or that?
