North county couple found passed out in truck with drugs, 3-year-old
NW Florida Daily News Staff
CRESTVIEW — Deputies with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office found a man and woman passed out in a truck at a gas pump in Crestview Monday night, while a 3-year-old child had syringes, methamphetamine, and oxycodone within easy reach.
According to a press release from OCSO, a member of the OCSO Street Crimes Unit was on patrol in the Crestview area when they spotted a white pickup truck with Mississippi tags that had been the subject of an earlier “Attempt to Identify” bulletin in reference to a theft around 10:30 p.m.
The truck was parked at a gas pump at a Tom Thumb store, 1992 W. James Lee Blvd. An OCSO sergeant spotted 23-year-old Amanda Hatton of Holt and 31-year-old Jared Smith of Baker unresponsive in the front seat. The sergeant also saw a crystalline substance, consistent with methanphetamine, and uncapped needles on the center console in plain view, easily visible from the exterior of the vehicle.
Hatton and Smith were awakened and detained. A search of the truck turned up methamphetamines and a powder form of oxycodone. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the couple arrived at the gas station around 8:45 p.m. The child was unsupervised for approximately two hours.
Post Miranda, Hatton admitted she used Dilaudid intravenously before arriving at the gas station. She passed out while Smith pumped fuel, the arrest report said.
Hatton and Smith are charged with child neglect, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
