Really? Police tell burglary victim to ‘check eBay’ for £20,000 of stolen goods

A business woman claims police told her to ‘check eBay and Cash Converters’ for her digital marketing company’s stolen property worth £20,000.

Caithy Walker, 34, said she was distraught when cops told her to look online after her offices in Whitefield, Greater Manchester, were broken into twice in just five weeks.

She said they told her they didn’t have enough officers available to attend to the break-in because of ‘government spending cuts’ and she was better off seeing if thieves were trying to sell her computers, camera equipment and jewellery.

‘They said they don’t have anyone who goes to burglaries anymore,’ Ms Walker from Bury, Greater Manchester, told the Daily Mail.

‘They said: “We would like to but we just don’t have the manpower”.’

She also alleged when they did send a forensic examiner they did not take key CCTV footage that showed a clear image of one of the thieves because they apparently couldn’t do anything with it.

The video also revealed one of the men could have a Salford accent and another one was called ‘Pete’.

She was later apparently told her case had been closed via text message.

Detective Chief Inspector John Mazzolai, from Greater Manchester Police, said: ‘On 6 April 2018, we were called to Bury Road in Whitefield to reports of a burglary.

‘While a high demand on resources meant officers were unavailable to attend at that time, our colleagues from the crime scene investigation team attended the property the same day and gathered as much evidence as was forensically possible.

‘As well as exploring forensic opportunities we viewed CCTV available to us and carried out house to house enquiries however, we have not unfortunately been able to establish any lines of enquiry that would lead us to the successful prosecution of an offender.

‘Considering this, the incident was raised with our local neighbourhood team who have met directly with Mrs Walker and, as with any report of crime, encourage people in the area to speak to their local neighbourhood team with any concerns they may have.

‘Where we would of course like to be able to catch every criminal and bring them to justice, with the current landscape of policing, it’s just not physically possible and we have to focus on those incidents that do have forensic opportunities or other elements like CCTV that could lead to a successful prosecution.

‘While this is the climate that we are working in, we endeavour to offer each member of the public with the same, high standard of service but are always willing to receive feedback on how we could improve.’
