Five masked men hammered a BMW with baseball bats while a five-year-old boy cowered in the back seat of the car.

Shocking footage filmed in Blackburn, Lancashire, shows the men attacking the car, which is blocked from escaping by another vehicle.

They are seen surrounding the vehicle and hitting it with the bats while the man behind the wheel tries to drive away.

Debris falls off the damaged BMW, which hits a Ford on the other side of the road at low-speed as the driver tries to escape.

Police have said the driver and his young son suffered minor injuries in the incident, which was described as a ‘targeted attack’.

It happened in the Queen’s Park Road area of Blackburn at about 6.20pm on Saturday.

A 19-year-old man from Blackburn has been arrested on suspicion of affray, and police are attempting to locate the other men involved in the incident.

Detective Sgt Rob Trickett, of Blackburn CID, said: ‘While we do believe that this was a targeted attack it was nonetheless terrifying for this man and especially for his young son who was with him in the car.

‘I would appeal for anyone with information to contact us.’

Officers have reassured the public that extra patrols are taking place in the area.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting log number 1268 of August 11 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
