Terrorism London car ramming treated as terror incident, police say; suspect in custody

By Edmund DeMarche, Ryan Gaydos | Fox News

British authorities said Tuesday they were treating a car ramming incident outside the Houses of Parliament as a terror incident and that a male suspect has been arrested.

The country’s counter-terrorism command was leading the investigation. Police said a “number of pedestrians” were injured in the incident, but didn’t specify how many. None of those hit were in serious condition, authorities said.

The suspect was described to be in his late 20s and he was arrested on suspicion of terror offenses, police said.

Ewalina Ochab, a witness, told the Press Association that the collision appeared to be deliberate.

"I was walking on the other side [of the road]. I heard some noise and someone screamed. I turned around and I saw a silver car driving very fast close to the railings, maybe even on the pavement," she reportedly said.

There are "dozens" of armed police at the scene, Sky News reported. The car slammed into barriers that had been extended following the Westminster Bridge attack.

No other details were immediately available, but Metropolitan Police said on Twitter that they will issue more information when they have it.

The entry at Westminster station has been closed for entry due to the security threat, police said.

The area was the site of a terror attack in March 2017 when Khalid Masood ploughed a car into crowds on Westminster Bridge, killing four people. Masood abandoned his car then stabbed and killed a police officer before being shot in a courtyard outside Parliament.

Update Suspect in London car ramming ID'd as British citizen from Sudan: reports

By Stephen Sorace | Fox News

The suspect in a car ramming outside Parliament that was being treated as a terror incident has been named as Salih Khater, according to British media reports Wednesday.

Khater, a 29-year-old British citizen, is originally from Sudan, the BBC reported. He was being questioned by authorities in south London on suspicion of preparing an act of terror.

According to the Press Association, a Facebook page for a man of the same name says he lives in Birmingham, works as a shop manager, and has studied at Sudan University of Science and Technology.

A car plowed into cyclists and crashed outside Parliament on Tuesday. Two people were hospitalized and one person was released, Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said. A woman was also being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries, he said.

The BBC reported that while the suspect wasn’t believed to be on MI5 or counterterrorism police’s radar, he was known to local police.

A motive has not been uncovered, but counterterrorism investigators suspect the incident is Britain’s fourth vehicle attack in 18 months.
