A trustee of L’Anse Creuse’s Board of Education is being accused of demanding that female marching band members wear bras and threatening to change the school's dress code.

Mary Hilton, who is also a parent-volunteer at L’Anse Creuse High School, called an all-girls meeting on Aug. 17 after hearing some students were not wearing bras during summer band practice, according to a L'Anse Creuse freshman.

The issue came up at a school board meeting on Aug. 20.

“She addressed us as a whole, saying that it had come to her attention that some of the girls had chosen not to wear a bra on the field during practice,” the freshman student, Julia Schnarrs, told the Macomb Daily.

“She later asked us if we agreed with her that a bra must always be worn during practice."

Scharrs told the school board that she didn't see any students raise their hands in agreement.

“We were then asked if we disagreed and that we thought it was OK not to wear a bra. A few girls, as well as I, raised our hands,” Schnarrs said during the board meeting last month. “We were told that we were wrong.”

The school’s dress code as it stands now calls for “respectable modesty.”

Hilton did not respond to calls and emails requesting comment when contacted Wednesday by the Detroit Free Press.

According to school officials, Hilton was acting as a parent-volunteer on Aug. 17 when the alleged comments were made, not as a trustee of the board of education. School officials also said the superintendent is in talks with the individuals and parents who brought their concerns to the board meeting, and that the current dress code does address undergarments.
