Democrats avoid sparring with Trump on caravan as midterm nears

Democrats appear to be remaining silent on the issue of the caravan of thousands of immigrants on the march from Central America and unwilling to get into a public debate with President Trump since the midterms are just weeks away.
Trump and his allies are urging to elect more Republicans, saying the caravan shows an immigration crisis that was exacerbated by the Democrats’ unwillingness to support tougher border measures, as proposed by Republicans and the White House.
"Every time you see a caravan, or people illegally coming, or attempting to come, into our country illegally, think of and blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic immigration laws!" Trump wrote in a tweet. "Remember the midterms!"
Yet Democrats, while previously outspoken regarding Trump’s immigration policies, are staying largely silent on the issue, preferring not to engage on the topic.
The reluctance to tackle Trump on his core issue may also be influenced by the concern that just two weeks before the midterms such a fight may energize his Republican supporters with little effect on their own voters.
The Democrats’ plans to retake the U.S. Senate also involve both winning and retaining seats in the red states that overwhelmingly voted for Trump, a difficult task considering Democratic candidates are already struggling there.
In North Dakota, for instance, North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is now trailing her Republican challenger Rep. Kevin Cramer by 16 points, according to a recent poll.
In Arizona, embattled Democratic Senate hopeful Kyrsten Sinema, who’s under fire for saying “I don’t care” if people go and fight for the Taliban in Afghanistan, is fighting for her political life against Republican Martha McSally. Sinema is now trailing McSally by two percentage points, though just last summer she was beating her opponent by as much as double digits.
“Democratic opposition to strong immigration security has been a very effective issue for us in Senate races this year,” Steven Law, head of the Senate Leadership Fund, told the Washington Post. “I don’t see how the spectacle of a massive horde trying to bust our borders on the brink of a national election remotely helps Democrats.”
Trump on Monday doubled-down on the issue, promising that there was no limit to the number of troops he’s prepared to send to defend the border from the caravan of thousands of immigrants.
His remarks came just days after a shocking footage surfaced showing the caravan defying the warnings, smashing a border fence and entering Mexico despite the presence of the riot police.
“Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States. Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergency. Must change laws!” Trump tweeted Monday.
The Democrats instead remain focused on tackling the GOP on issues like healthcare, believing it’s the winning issue this election cycle in the wake of the Republican plans to repeal the last remaining aspects of the Obamacare if they win the midterm election.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrats in the country, slammed Trump in a statement regarding the caravan of migrants, saying he’s “desperate” to change the conversation because “health care is the number one issue Americans care about.”
According to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey published last week, which surveyed people since the beginning of the caravan earlier this month, the issue of immigration isn’t the top concern for voters. It ranks below health care, which has consistently been the most important issue in this election, the economy, jobs and is as important as policies concerning gun rights.
But the issue of health care is significantly less important to Republicans, who put immigration and the economy as way more important issues, suggesting the GOP efforts to highlight the caravan controversy is aimed at increasing the turnout of their base in the upcoming election.
The strategy might be working as Republican-affiliated early voters are surpassing Democratic-affiliated ones in early voting in several states with key elections, according to the Hill.
The Republican early voters are reportedly exceeding Democratic early voters in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, Tennessee and Texas.
Mexican news says caravans grow to 14,000 people

Members of the illegal immigrant caravan chanted “si se pudo!” as they made their way north through Mexico Monday, having defied the will of one country and vowing to test the spine of another, the U.S., very soon.
The chant, which translates roughly as “Yes we could,” is a takeoff on the “Si se puede” — Yes we can! — cheer that immigrant-rights activists have used for years, and which the Obama campaign co-opted in 2008.
Mexican police, who failed to stop them at that country’s border with Guatemala, now serve as escorts for the caravan as it barrels north, its members clear that they have no intention of staying in Mexico, and have eyes only for the U.S.
New estimates cited by El Universal, a Mexican newspaper, say the caravan now has 14,000 people, many of them already in Mexico while others still wait
One woman quoted by BBC, identified as Maria, walking with her husband and two children, said they are looking for work.
That would put them in the category of illegal migrants, not asylum-seekers. Yet many appear confident they can take advantage of lax U.S. laws to gain a foothold in the shadows.
President Trump, who’s been unable to win changes to U.S. laws, has pressured Honduras — the source of most of this caravan’s members — as well as Guatemala and Mexico, which the caravan must travel through to reach the U.S., to do more.
“Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the U.S. We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given to them,” the president said on Twitter.
It’s not clear what he’ll be able to do.
Congress has appropriated tens of millions of dollars in American aid for each of those countries, and in draft spending bills has even raised the amount for 2019, compared to what Mr. Trump had requested.

What is lax about your current laws?
Surely if one turns up, says they are here to work, then they get denied entry?
No green card, no working visa, no entry? yes?
If they claim asylum then they are penned, and processed, if they can't prove oppression by state, or fear for life, then they get removed.
I somehow doubt a train of 4K people is going to manage to enter the US illegally and disappear.
Is it any different in the US?
For 8 years under Obama, our immigration laws were completely ignored and Immigration agents were told to stand down. It emboldened states with liberal governments to do the same, so any and every state run by Democrats willfully ignore our immigration laws even today, even though we now have a President that fully intends to enforce our immigration laws. That's why California is overrun with illegals, they keep catering to them instead of enforcing the law like they're supposed to. And any time federal authorities get involved to enforce the law, the liberal states run interference so that the feds can't do their jobs as the law prescribes.
Our border with Mexico is huge. It spans about 4 large states. Every inch of that border can't be monitored constantly, and illegals have been finding ways across and under it in its current state for as long as 30-40 years. So it's entirely possible that they could get across and into the country without detection. Sure, we'll catch some of them, but where there's a will, there's a way, and some of them will disappear and maybe pop up 20 years later in some community somewhere in the US far away from the US-Mexico border. Illegals are doing it every day.
And current estimates have the number to be closer to 14000. The most disturbing part about this is that it's been reported that the Mexican Federales have arrested ISIS operatives that were marching with them... back when they were still just 4000 strong. And this is one of the absolute biggest reasons we want our border security raised to begin with... to keep those assholes out and keep our citizens safe.

Also the Obama approach was catch and release, so as all these people would enter the country, you would document them, give them a court date and let them in. Strangely none of them ever showed up to court after that

Same with the boats that come to Aus from middle east stopping over in South East Asia on the way.
You guys have the perfect solution. Make it a trial by fire. Drop them in the middle of nowhere out in the outback. If they can survive and make it to a city without being killed by your wildlife, then they can stay.

Migrants forming next wave at Honduran border, set to follow larger group: report

A second migrant caravan is forming at the Honduran border and is expected to follow the larger caravan of more than 7,000 from Central America towards the U.S.-Mexico border, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.
Guatemalan authorities on Sunday estimated the new group -- which gathered in a Guatemalan city near the border of Honduras -- to be at 1,000. But the group appears to be growing. The Journal, citing estimates from church-run charities and activists, reported that the group is now made up of about 2,500.
The new caravan reportedly plans to follow in the footsteps of the larger group, who passed through the southern Mexico border over the weekend.
The vast majority of the migrants are from Honduras who are escaping crime and extreme poverty. Activists say migrants opt to travel in large numbers to avoid the dangers of crime and human traffickers.
