Britain Brexit cancelled? Will Theresa May CANCEL BREXIT after ECJ Article 50 ruling?

By Kat Hopps - The Express

BREXIT is under threat after the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled this morning that the UK can unilaterally revoke Article 50 - but will Theresa May now decide to cancel Brexit?

Prime Minister Theresa May’s mantra over the past two years has repeatedly been “Brexit means Brexit”, insisting the UK is leaving the European Union (EU) next March. But just hours before Tuesday’s crunch vote, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) threw Mrs May’s Brexit plan into fresh turmoil. A panel of 28 judges ruled Britain could reverse its decision on leaving the EU without needing the permission of the other EU 27 member states. MPs were already tipped to reject the existing deal in the House of Commons tomorrow night.

But this morning’s ECJ vote could potentially sway even more MPs into rejecting it so as to opt for a second referendum.

Will Theresa May CANCEL BREXIT after ECJ Article 50 ruling?

Tuesday’s vote will still go ahead despite the ECJ ruling, Downing Street has said.

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay also confirmed the Commons vote was “100 percent happening”.

However, this has done little to quell rumours Mrs May could be seeking to postpone it in order to avoid a humiliating defeat tomorrow.

The Sun’s political editor has reported the Prime Minister has gathered together ministers in a meeting on whether to pull parliament’s vote.

Tom Newton Dunn tweeted: "The PM has called together all her senior aides for a meeting on the Meaningful Vote in No10 now. A decision on whether to pull it appears imminent."

Chief Whip Julian Smith is also said to be the latest minister urging Mrs May to cancel the vote, as reported by the Daily Telegraph.

The Prime Minister’s credibility would be hugely undermined if she caved into pressure.

She was supported by Environment Secretary Michael Gove who insisted earlier “the vote is going ahead”.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We voted very clearly - 17.4 million people sent a clear message that we wanted to leave the European Union and that means also leaving the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

"So, this case is all very well but it doesn't alter either the referendum vote or the clear intention of the Government to make sure that we leave on March 29."

Senior Tory Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said the decision was the correct one but would not change anything.

The chairman of the European Research Group told LBC that "a straight reading of Article 50 would lead you to this view, so I'm not unhappy about it".

But he added: "Will it change any votes tomorrow? I wouldn't have thought so because the only way to stay in the European Union is to legislate to do so, to reverse the Withdrawal Act, and that would require the Government to do a complete U-turn.

"I think this Government would find it very difficult to remain the Government if it went away from what it said in its manifesto and the referendum result."

So what is it gonna be? Go with what the voters voted for or just do what she wants?

What if the investigation proves Russian interference and spreading misinformation in media leading up to the vote though Just a hypothetical because I think it's still an ongoing investigation.

I don't think I understand Brexit. Didn't the people vote to make this happen? Why hasn't it happened?

It looks like May is facing a no-confidence vote now. Parliament is looking to oust her.

Somebody tried to take the ceremonial mace from the House of Commons yesterday?

    Am I saying that right?

I don't think Parliament likes the deal that May struck up with the EU. They called for a vote of no confidence in May yesterday. They're voting today.
