One thing I miss about living in Vermont is getting to hear Canadian bands that you don't normally get to hear down here in the states. Being only 60 miles or so from Montreal, the best station to listen to where we lived was 97.7 CHOM-FM from Montreal. They played all kinds of good music, a mixture of 'popular' stuff that' was normally on the rock charts and a lot of Canadian stuff mixed in that never made it to the States. It was an English language station in a French speaking province, so by law they had to play at least one French song per hour which was always weird.
When I was short, we had three television channels. A local channel, CBC which was nation-wide, and the French channel. I was offended even as a lad
Yeah we've had a lifetime of radio and TV stations always having to play a certain amount of Canadian content. It got pretty repetitive at times.
For concerts we only had the Corral hockey auditorium which sat something like 8000-10000 I think. So larger American bands would pass on by during the concert circuit and we saw acts like Trooper, Prism, Loverboy, April Wine on a constant loop.
A really big concert for me was in grade 7 and was Van Halen during their first tour. I still remember the flashpots and Alex VH lighting part of his drum kit on fire. It was borderline safe at best

We got the Canadian TV stations as well We got the two big Canadian networks, CTV and CBC and then a couple of French stations.
As far as concerts, luckily Montreal drew all the big ones, they would always play at the Forum. Every big name band I ever saw I saw in Montreal.

When I think back to the three channels, which also started and stopped at certain times in the day (6am to 2am at most), it really helped me appreciate anything outside of normal programming.
We had a late movie sort of thing on one of the channels every Friday night and no matter what they showed, it was a big deal.
And when CBC showed Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday night, no wonder it became such a phenomenon up here.

Thinking back to the old days really helps me understand why Canadians are the way they are now.
Huge country, typically cold in most parts for half of the year, minimal entertainment and...beer.
I read Canadians have a huge percentage of people online comparative to other countries and is it any wonder? Yes we have great scenery but we suffered for decades by having limited entertainment both musically and visually.

Anyone else remember having to use one of these when doing a research paper back in high school? Especially if older magazine or newspapers were being used in part of your research.

Hell I still remember the old mimeograph machine and the smelly rubber-like sheets it would produce.
We kept it in a special room along with the special chemicals used to make the photocopies.
This one teacher used it exclusively for tests and handouts in his class and he was a lil weird
