My understanding is, other than those ultra-compressed mp3 files we used to download from sites like Limewire and Kazaa, cassettes are the WORST when it comes to audio quality. Even 8 Tracks are rated higher on the audio quality scale. The only reason cassettes became so popular was their portability factor.
And from everything I've ready, a virgin vinyl album has the highest audio quality to this date still. But only the very first time you play it because each time you do play it, the quality will slowly degrade (slightly, but it degrades) because of the nature of using a needle on vinyl.
And yes, I'm positive it's hipsters driving the cassette revival.
I threw away my cassette collection a couple of years ago. Over 200 and some of the older ones were from that cassette club thing where they initially gave you whole bunch for cheap and then sent you one monthly while they harassed you.
fuck you columbia house
They used to be a club where you could get a whole lot of cheap stuff up front but then you needed to buy a bunch of expensive stuff to 'end' your contract.

I zoomed in and spotted the fine print. Not nice!
And if I remember correctly, at the time, 'regular club price' was something like $14.95 plus shipping, so one cassette would end up costing you something like $20. Plus, they sent you a monthly 'club selection' every month, which was some crappy cassette nobody wanted anyway, and if you didn't send the card back in 10 days saying that you didn't want it, it would automatically get shipped to you and you were on the hook for paying for it.

I was a member back in the early to mid 90s when they were doing CDs. I don't remember it being as expensive as it's listed in that advert. They had a lot of good stuff at discounted prices compared to the music stores, and I was buying CDs out the ass back then anyway, so my membership was fulfilled after my first order after the free stuff came. They had deals all the time where you could buy 2 and get a 3rd free except for shipping, or buy 3 and get 2 more free plus shipping, and the total cost always worked out to be cheaper then buying 3 or 5 at the music stores. They used to initially do the club selection where if you didn't respond they'd send it to you, but they got hit with a class action lawsuit back in the late 80s and had to stop doing it. I never had to deal with that. Anyway, I was a member for about 2 years and I built up my CD collection using it. I had no complaints about it. It was pretty good when I was a member.
My older brother did it in the 80s and figured out a way to get the free stuff without fulfilling the "contract", I think it was because he was underage and they didn't have an age requirement for membership, so there was nothing they could do about it when he didn't buy the required stuff. He got a bunch of free cassettes and just threw the mailings away.

Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it.
I was buying CD's thru them at one time too, not sure when that stupid 'send the card back' thing ended, but I got bit by it more than once. And even with CD's, their 'regular club price' when shipping and handling was added, ended up being way more than what it would cost retail.
I never bought a single cd alone, there was always some sort of multi-deal that I was taking advantage of. The music stores around where I lived were all independently owned, so they were probably jacking prices up on CDs, so that the membership looked good comparatively speaking. But I never got bit by an unsolicited "club selection". Now that I'm thinking about it, it was probably the mid 90s, and they weren't doing music for very much longer after I canceled my membership, so maybe their deals were a little too good for the business model and forced them to change formats later. I just remember never having a problem with the service and always found stuff that I wanted to listen to.

I bought cassettes and Lance was spot on. Get the first group of 12 really cheap and then they would automatically send you 'suggestions' based on your taste and jack up the price of those.
Typically you didn't want their suggested items so they forced you to ship them back, and that return process was nothing like it is today.
