Earlier this week, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) criticized President Donald Trump for deporting illegal aliens — including those charged with drunk driving.
Menendez, appearing on the “Situation Room” with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, was asked to respond to a claim by Matt Albence, deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who said capping the number of beds at immigration detention centers would be “extremely damaging to public safety.” When asked by Blitzer how he responds to Albence’s remarks, Menendez criticized the very notion of saying someone who enters the country illegally has committed a crime.
"The reason that they are already 8,000 over their budgeted amount, so they're violating the budget, is because of the president's zero-tolerance policy that has turned everyone, regardless of their record, into a criminal," Menendez said. "For example, if you cross the border undocumented, he has now made you a criminal. He is creating that problem by turning people away who legitimately seek asylum."
Newsflash: Trump didn’t make illegal border crossing illegal. It was illegal long before he became president.
Nevertheless, Menendez persisted:
"If a person has a driving while under the influence violation, he is now making that, saying that that's a criminal.”
Menendez also added that violent criminals should simply be “arrested” and “deported.”
So, driving drunk isn’t a crime in Menendez’s book?
Consider the number of American citizens killed by illegal aliens who were drunk behind the wheel. Perhaps the most famous example is Brandon Mendoza, a police officer in Mesa, Arizona, who was killed in 2014 by an illegal immigrant driving the wrong way on the highway, according to the Daily Caller. His mother, Mary Ann Mendoza, is part of the “Angel Families” organization that is trying to change immigration laws. Another one of these “Angel Moms,” as they’re referred to, is Michelle Root, whose daughter, Sarah, was killed by a drunk, drag-racing illegal immigrant in 2016. Wendy and DJ Corcoran lost their 22-year-old son Pierce to an illegal immigrant who was driving drunk on the wrong side of the road. Maureen Maloney’s son, Matthew Denice, was also killed by an illegal immigrant who was driving drunk. Sabine Durden’s son, Dominic, was killed by an illegal immigrant who previously had been convicted twice of driving under the influence.
ICE’s annual report shows that 80,730 people that ICE arrested had been “charged or convicted of driving under the influence in 2018,” according to The Washington Free Beacon. That’s nearly half of the total people arrested by ICE that year (158,000).
Menendez is not the only Democrat to think drunk driving shouldn’t be such a big issue when it comes to illegal immigrants. Democrats in Charlotte, North Carolina want police to stop placing drunk driving and traffic safety checkpoints near immigrant neighborhoods, according to WBT radio.
