all you really need to do to make fuzz is put a 12AZ7 in your 12AX7 spot and turn down the treble

Its kinda like the inverse of why use a 12AY7 in the phase inverter position - just a bitta compression, without a compressor - you can drive the plates as much as you want but the voltage wont ever go high enough to overload the circuit....whereas the Z just goes into that "plate overload" pretty much right away
