I am considering something close to home.... the people I work with are really the working poor. They have amazing attitudes, yet struggle to make ends meet. I have employees come through who are using every available means just to pay for basics. It's a little depressing. I think I might take $50 and ask the HR person to provide it anonymously to a great employee who just needs a small boost to buy a Christmas gift for a kid.

<--- working poor and yes, I accept donations
The United Way is great charity. At my bank we make it even easier to give by doing payroll deductions.
I deduct $500 per pay period (24 times a year to total $12,000) and it goes directly to the United Way. What's really nice is that the money is taken out before taxes so it lowers my tax burden and helps people all at once.
Search for "United Way of (insert city/county here)" and you'll find your local one. That's another thing, all the donations stay in the community they were donated from. It's 100% neighbors helping neighbors.

I give my money to the Federal govt. and let Barack distribute it to all the charitys..

Have you ever considered having a silent auction at work and donating all the proceeds to a charity?
The bank donates chairs, desks, and other crap like that. Employees bring in baked goods and an assortment of garage sale type items. Each item has a sheet where you write your name and your bid. Highest bid at the end of the week gets the item.
All proceeds are turned into a cashier's check and donated to the charity of our choosing. The last auction raised just over $1000 and people got some pretty cool stuff for opening their wallets.
For the gamers out there.

I had an awkward conversation with a female friend who had a rough year, so I decided that she deserved a pick-me-up and sent her a nice mp3 player. Charity begins at home, right?

Actually, I feel a little dumb with thread. Other people are able to do SO much more than me. I don't think I'll do this again, but it was nice to do for a few years.
