you aren't the only one
It's a Walmart self check out. Happens at other stores as well. The metal plate (where the bags are) has a weight sensor that confirms you have placed a scanned item into the bagging area. If you are a little slow to move an item from scanner to the metal plate, it errors out saying "please place the item in the bagging area". Conversely, if you place an item in the bagging area that hasn't been scanned, it errors out saying "unexpected item in the bagging area".
It is not unusual to get the "please place" error code if you are a little slow moving the item after a scan. It is also not unusual, as depicted in the meme, to hear the "please place" error, move the item to the bagging area, then hear an immediate "unexpected item" error message. It's momentarily frustrating until the computer catches up with you and clears the errors.
I wanted to be a Monk, but I never got the chants.
i assumed that was it, but it doesn't seem like a one panel picture is sufficient to explain all that

I won't use the self check outs. If I have to wait for someone to come ring up my beer it defeats the purpose.

Self checkouts are brutal. I'll just wait in line.

I'll use them in some places. Not in my grocery. That place requires you to have a store card to use it. I don't have or want a store card so I would have to wait for a person to come anyway to bypass.

It's the worst when the scales are out of calibration. You scan something, put it in the bagging area, then the machine thinks you put too much in the bagging area because the weight came up wrong. At the two Walmarts closest to me that I get groceries at, they disabled the scales, so it works so much better now.
I use self checkout exclusively, unless I have something that needs to be rung up by a clerk like beer or gift cards or something like that.
It's more brutal waiting in line when there's old people in front of you that are still either paying by check or they need to count out the exact change to pay for their groceries. Self checkout all the way...unless you are waiting for one to open and they are all full of idiots that either are going so slow or they act like they have no idea how to use one and need the one clerk watching all the checkouts to basically do it for them (usually old people).
None of the stores I go to require store cards to use their self checkouts. Not King Soopers (Kroger), not Safeway, not Target, and not Walmart. That's just odd.
