They can request asylum in the US even if they cross illegally. The system is a mess not only because of the border, but also I believe they all automatically get a deportation hearing. (Or an asylum hearing, someone fact check me). For a long time it was "catch and release" meaning they would get caught, given a hearing date in the distant future, then released into the country. It makes no sense.

Here's a pamphlet on how to legally apply for entry into the US. Now go back from whence you came. The end.
