Teh One Who Knocks

Because by beating the Lions last night, it keeps the Redskins alive for the final Wild Card spot in the playoffs. If the Lions had beaten the Cowboys, the Redskins would have been eliminated.

Bills running back Reggie Bush finished the season with 12 rushes for negative-3 yards, becoming the first non-quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to finish a season with negative yards on 10 or more carries.

Bush, a former Heisman winner and No. 2 overall draft pick, didn't get a carry in Sunday's loss to the Jets despite LeSean McCoy suffering a high ankle sprain.

Bush was aware of the record, as was interim coach Anthony Lynn, who said during the week he "would love to get [Bush] a couple carries."

"It's tough," Bush said in the Bills' locker room Wednesday. "I just didn't have a lot of opportunities this year. And so I'm not worried about that, finishing with negative yards or anything like that. If I had more opportunities, it would be a different story. But I didn't have that."

The last player to finish in negative yardage on at least 10 rushes, excluding quarterbacks, was Chicago fullback John Adams in 1961, per Pro Football Reference data.

A few dozen players finished the 2016 season with negative rushing yards. Most were quarterbacks or running backs who carried only a handful of times. Ravens punter Sam Koch ranked last with negative-23 yards. Lions receiver Golden Tate lost 3 yards on nine rushes.

Bush had bounced back into positive yardage in early December, but fell back into the negatives by losing eight yards on a reverse against Miami last week. He also lost 10 yards earlier this year on a failed running back pass. In chronological order, Bush's 12 carries went for -3, 5, -6, 3, 1, 5, 1, 2, -10, 3, 4 and -8 yards.

Bush made $1.5 million this season. He had one rushing touchdown and also caught seven passes for 90 yards.

Jay Cutler departs Chicago as Bears' most underappreciated, misunderstood QB ever
Cutler is the greatest quarterback in franchise history, but was unfairly demonized in his Bears career
by Sean Wagner-McGough - CBS Sports

http://i.imgur.com/uF48BOZ.jpg

It began with four interceptions in Green Bay in 2009. It ended with an interception in New Jersey in 2016.

In between, there was a God-given arm squeezing rockets into double coverage. There was an embarrassing offensive line allowing concussion-inducing sacks. There was an NFC North crown and a playoff win. There was a controversial injury and a devastating loss. There were perfectly weighted fades to Brandon Marshall and home-run bombs to Alshon Jeffery. There were 154 touchdown passes and 109 interceptions. There were 18 game-winning drives. There were Super Bowl aspirations and burning dumpsters.

The Jay Cutler era in Chicago is over. On Thursday, the Bears cut him. Cutler, 33, is no longer the quarterback of the Chicago Bears. The dream former Bears general manager Jerry Angelo had when he sent a king’s ransom -- including two first-round picks -- to Denver in April 2009 never materialized.

Cutler’s legacy, however, is more complicated than wins and losses. This won’t be an easy eulogy, because his career can’t be captured by his touchdowns and interceptions. What Cutler is leaving behind is the legacy of a quarterback who dedicated his heart and body to a city and sport that never loved him back, because they both failed to understand him.

Jay Cutler departs Chicago as the most underappreciated and misunderstood player -- arguably ever.

Jay Cutler still lacking interest from QB-needy teams

Tony Romo's retirement to the broadcast booth took one quarterback out of this offseason's game of musical chairs.

Even with a dearth of capable quarterbacks on the open market and few pro-ready signal-callers in the draft, one man can't sniff a gig: Jay Cutler.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday on Good Morning Football that Cutler's market is almost zilch.

"I've had a lot of conversations with general managers or head coaches talking about where these quarterbacks are going to land and it is unbelievable that Cutler's name rarely, if ever, comes up," Rapoport said.

With Romo out of the mix and Houston heading into the draft with injury-prone Tom Savage as the starter, the Texans have been pondered as a landing spot for Cutler. But Rapoport reiterated that the Texans don't view Cutler as a fit -- he added Colin Kaepernick is also not a fit for Houston.

If Romo's retirement can't get Cutler into the game, it might never happen. That could leave the 12-year pro with one option: retirement.

"There's really only a couple starting quarterback spots that are even available," Rapoport said. "The Browns would be one. It doesn't seem like Cutler would be interested in going there. The Texans would be another. It doesn't seem they have interest in him. So Cutler may face a similar situation, actually, to Tony Romo, which is to just chill, wait, and if something happens -- some horrible camp injury, like what happened to Teddy Bridgewater last year -- maybe Cutler's name would be called. But I do know he's talked to people that he knows pretty well about retirement being a possibility. He actually might have no choice."

If the call never comes for Smokin' Jay, at least he'll walk away having given us one more lasting image.

==============================

Jay Cutler still doesn't have a job. There are reports he might not even want one.

One could surmise this to be a time of great introspection for the man. For Cutler's entire life, football has dominated his being. What happens when you remove the compartment of your existence that, both internally and externally, defined you? The thing that made you ... you?

DENVER (CBS4) – While breaking records as a member of the Denver Broncos, Peyton Manning made “Omaha” famous. Now he’s revealing why.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">We certainly appreciate all the love from <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/PeytonManning?src=hash">#PeytonManning</a> :) <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OmahaOmaha?src=hash">#OmahaOmaha</a></p>&mdash; Official Omaha Info (@VisitOmaha) <a href="https://twitter.com/VisitOmaha/status/422509031190573056">January 12, 2014</a></blockquote><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
The future Hall of Fame quarterback’s numerous shout outs to the the Nebraska city from the line of scrimmage were a bit of a mystery all the way up to and continuing on through to the day of his retirement.

In 2014 Manning kept a straight face when he asked about it.

“I’ve had a lot of people ask me what ‘Omaha’ means,” Manning said. “It’s a run play, but it could be a pass play, or a play-action pass, depending on a couple of things. The wind, which way we’re going, the quarter and the jerseys we’re wearing. It varies from play to play.”

Which, of course, got people more confused.

But now, more than a year removed from his retirement day, news is emerging that Manning has spilled the beans about what “Omaha” actually meant.

http://i.imgur.com/pU12ehSl.jpg

“Omaha was just an indicator word,” Manning said at a recent marketing summit. “It was a trigger word that meant we had changed the play, there was low time on the clock and the ball needed to be snapped.”

DENVER — Broncos linebacker and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller helped give away free glasses to children from the Denver metro area as part of his Von’s Vision charitable foundation on Wednesday.

The Von’s Vision Day reveal party was held at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

In March, Von’s Vision provided free screenings to more than 100 children who come from low-income families. Those who needed vision correction picked out frames and were invited to meet Miller to receive the glasses.

The children and their families were able to meet Miller, take pictures with him and tour the stadium.

“The ability to see clearly is fundamental to kids’ success at home and school. That’s why Von’s Vision gives out glasses. We’re providing that key to success,” Miller said. “I hope that these kids’ new glasses help build their confidence and their desire to learn.”

Chicago Bears draft analysis-
Best move: If Mitchell Trubisky becomes the Bears' franchise quarterback, general manager Ryan Pace will look like a genius for moving up one spot to take him. The Bears have been without a marquee quarterback since Sid Luckman in the 1940s. The Jay Cutler era is over, and fans want to move forward. Trubisky could be the missing piece, as long as he develops properly.

Riskiest move: Every ... single ... pick, including Trubisky. If Trubisky is a bust -- he only started one year at North Carolina -- Pace is toast. Second-round tight end Adam Shaheen played Division II. So did fifth-round guard Jordan Morgan. Chicago traded up for Alabama safety Eddie Jackson in Round 4, but he broke his leg last year. Later in the fourth round, Chicago drafted running back Tarik Cohen from FCS school North Carolina A&T. I’m going to lay down.

The contract is heavily incentive-laden according to local news. And it's only a one year deal. If he can stay healthy this year, he still should have some mileage left in his body, he's only played a total of 8 games over the last two seasons. If he stays healthy, the dude's a beast. If not, no big deal, it's worth a shot. Broncos took a flyer on Manning and that worked out okay.

Cortez Kennedy, an icon with the Seattle Seahawks who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012, has died at age 48, the Orlando Police Department said Tuesday.

Orlando police confirmed to ESPN that they are investigating Kennedy's death, but also said "there is nothing suspicious to report" at this time.

Kennedy died alone, according to police.

Kennedy was a force inside, both as a run stopper and in threatening quarterbacks. The 1992 Defensive Player of the Year made eight Pro Bowls, had 58 sacks -- an unusually high total for a tackle -- and spent his entire 11-season career with Seattle, starting 153 out of 167 games.

Named to the Associated Press 1990s All-Decade team, Kennedy was credited with 448 tackles, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and three interceptions during his NFL career.

http://i.imgur.com/BHzXBKp.jpg

Kennedy retired in 2000, was named to the Seahawks Ring of Honor and had his No. 96 retired by the team.

"Cortez will be remembered not only for all his great achievements on the football field but how he handled himself off the field," Pro Football Hall of Fame CEO David Baker said in a statement. "He epitomized the many great values this game teaches which serves as inspiration to millions of fans."

The third overall pick in the 1990 NFL draft was an All-America honoree at the University of Miami and was on the Hurricanes' 1989 national championship team. Kennedy also was inducted into the Miami Hurricanes Ring of Honor and the university's Hall of Fame.

Jimmy Johnson, who coached Kennedy at Miami, said he was "shocked" by Kennedy's death.

http://i.imgur.com/ShnKVdQ.jpg

Even though he last played for the Seahawks in 2000, he remained a significant part of the organization. He was a mainstay around the team during training camp and would occasionally roll through the locker room during the regular season grabbing a few minutes with anyone -- players, coaches, media -- up for a chat.

Seahawks players past and present expressed their condolences on social media.

Kennedy also spent the past several years as an informal consultant with the New Orleans Saints because of his close relationship with general manager Mickey Loomis, dating back to their days together with the Seahawks

by Ryan Wilson - CBS Sports

It's official: Derek Carr is now the highest-paid player in NFL history. The new deal is worth $125 million over five years, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport and TheMMQB.com's Albert Breer. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports Carr will make just under $69 million over the first three years of the deal.

As promised, Carr confirms he's staying with the Raiders.

http://i.imgur.com/RQ7E0hm.jpg

Carr, a 2014 second-round pick, has been the centerpeice of the Raiders' turnaround. The team went 3-13 his rookie season, improved to 7-9 in 2015 and was one of the best teams in the league a season ago, finishing 12-4. But Carr suffered a broken leg in Week 16 and the Raiders lost to the Texans in the wild-card game.

The takeaway: Carr is invaluable, reaffirming the theory that an organization is only as good as its franchise quarterback. Not only did Carr complete 64 percent of his passes with 28 touchdowns and just six interceptions last season but he ranked seventh among all quarterbacks, according to Football Outsiders' metrics, ahead of Ben Roethlisberger, Matthew Stafford and Andrew Luck.

Those numbers go a long way in explaining the huge pay bump.

http://i.imgur.com/BxOvOXS.jpg

Carr will average $25 million a year, which puts him ahead of Luck, Carson Palmer and Drew Brees, who all average $24 million and change annually. Fun fact: This is a 2,457.5 percent increase over the $977,519 Carr was going to make in 2017, which was the final year of his rookie deal.

http://i.imgur.com/R8K79AO.jpg

Added bonus: Depending on how Carr's contract is structured, he could end up earning millions more simply by having a Nevada address.

The Raiders are moving to Las Vegas in 2020. As SI.com pointed out in January, this is important because while California's tax rate is 13.3 percent on those who earn more than a $1 million a year -- and between 10.3 and 12.3 percent if you earn $268,750 to $1 million -- Nevada does not have a state income tax. And this is in addition to the federal income tax, which imposes a 39.6 percent tax rate for single taxpayers with a taxable income of more than $413,650.

Put another way: As ESPN's Adam Schefter tweets, Carr could backload his impending new deal and save millions of dollars. And he wouldn't be the only Raiders player to benefit.

Jim Brown Gives Us 'The Real Deal' On Colin Kaepernick, Flag, Activism

ThePostGame.com

Jim Brown says he can appreciate Colin Kaepernick's desire to fight for a righteous cause, but the Pro Football Hall of Famer and iconic social activist disagrees with his method.

"I want to be in his corner, and I do think, 'God bless him,'" Brown told ThePostGame.

But kneeling for the national anthem the way Kaepernick did last season as 49ers quarterback isn't how Brown would show leadership.

"I'm going to give you the real deal: I'm an American," Brown said. "I don't desecrate my flag and my national anthem. I'm not gonna do anything against the flag and national anthem. I'm going to work within those situations. But this is my country, and I'll work out the problems, but I'll do it in an intelligent manner."

It's one thing to take a stance against police brutality and for the equal treatment of minorities as Kaepernick has. But it's another to do it in a way that mobilizes others to rally behind you.

"If you have a cause, I think you should organize it, present it in a manner where it's not only you standing or sitting on one knee, but a lot of people that is gonna get behind each other and do something about it," Brown said. "If I ask you one question: Who is Colin calling on to follow what he's talking about?"

Brown also made the point that it is tough to balance activism while playing pro sports.

"Colin has to make up his mind whether he's truly an activist or he's a football player," Brown said. "Football is commercial. You have owners. You have fans. And you want to honor that if you're making that kind of money. ...

"You have to understand there's intelligence that's involved, OK? I can't be two things at once that contradict each other. If I sign for money, then the people I sign with, they have rules and regulations."

One of the biggest challenges facing Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler since joining the team three weeks ago is developing chemistry with his receivers. Cutler had never played with his skill-position teammates, and it's vital they get on the same page before next month's regular-season opener.

Thursday night's 38-31 preseason loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was a step in the right direction. Cutler connected with receivers DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills and Jarvis Landry, and threw a touchdown to tight end Julius Thomas in less than a half of work. Cutler finished 5-of-8 passing for 105 yards and a touchdown in five series.

http://i.imgur.com/9pxu4lCl.jpg

Cutler's best throw was a 72-yard pass to Parker, who won the jump ball. Cutler also threw deep to Stills in the end zone, drawing a pass-interference penalty. It is clear Cutler will challenge the deep part of the field much more than injured quarterback Ryan Tannehill has with Miami.

It wasn't a perfect night for Cutler. He lost a fumble after being hit by Eagles defensive end Vinny Curry when Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil missed a block. Cutler was pulled early in the second quarter in what could be his final preseason action. If that is the case, Cutler finished the exhibition season 7-of-10 for 129 yards and a touchdown.

QB depth chart: While Cutler had a strong outing, it wasn't a good game for backup Matt Moore. He threw two interceptions in his first three pass attempts, and the second turnover was returned for a touchdown. Moore did lead a two-minute drive at the end of the first half that led to a 56-yard field goal. David Fales and Brandon Doughty continue their battle for the No. 3 quarterback job. Doughty made a touchdown throw to receiver Jakeem Grant, who broke two tackles on the way to the end zone. But Doughty also threw an interception in the fourth quarter.

When it was starters vs. starters, the Dolphins looked ...: Competitive. There were plenty of positive plays for Miami's starters, particularly on offense. But overall the team looked competitive. It was an explosive night from a scoring perspective, with neither defense able to make stops. But the Dolphins, on the road, matched the Eagles drive for drive when starters were in the game. Miami led 21-14 early in the second quarter, which is when both teams began pulling starters.

One reason to be concerned: Eagles second-year quarterback Carson Wentz had his way with Miami's pass defense. He finished 6-of-10 passing for 129 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Miami had a miscommunication on the first drive between cornerback Byron Maxwell and Reshad Jones that led to a 50-yard touchdown throw from Wentz to receiver Torrey Smith. Wentz also connected with receiver Alshon Jeffery for a second touchdown and thrived when the Dolphins didn't blitz. Miami's secondary needs to cover better in man and zone.

That guy could start: It has been a rough summer for 2015 second-round pick Jordan Phillips. The defensive tackle was inconsistent early and demoted in favor of rookie Davon Godchaux, a fifth-rounder. But Phillips responded Thursday with perhaps the best defensive play of the preseason. He caught a tipped pass for an interception and nearly rumbled his way for a touchdown during an 18-yard return before stepping out of bounds at the 2-yard line. Phillips' turnover set up Miami's second touchdown of the first quarter and puts him back in the competition with Godchaux for a starting job.

Rookie watch: Godchaux made his second start of the preseason and recorded two tackles. He still has the inside track to become Miami's only Week 1 starter from this year’s draft class.

Ajayi strong: Jay Ajayi looks ready for the regular season. Miami's Pro Bowl running back had two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter as part of a nine-carry, 53-yard outing. Similar to last year, Ajayi broke numerous tackles and made tough runs. He suffered a concussion during the first week of training camp and appears to be fully recovered.

Pouncey debuts: Dolphins starting center Mike Pouncey played for the first time since injuring his hip last season. Pouncey played four offensive series and was pulled at the 1:14 mark of the first quarter. It probably will be the former Pro Bowler's last action of the preseason.

LeSean McCoy says there's only one reason Colin Kaepernick isn't in the NFL ... he's not that good at football.

McCoy unloaded about Kaepernick after Bills practice moments ago ... saying he doesn't believe the league is being unfair to the embattled QB at all.

"You just got to look at all sides, like if I'm an owner, or the GM of a team, do I want to put him on my team? Is he good enough to be on the squad, to even deal with everything that's going on? That's something that I don't really partake in," Shady said.

That wasn't all, the Pro Bowl running back went on to say he thinks a better player like Tom Brady or Odell Beckham wouldn't even be dealing with the heat Kaep is getting.

"Take a guy like Michael Vick who went through all that he went through. He's 10 times better than Kaepernick. So you'll deal with that situation. You'll deal with that attention, the media aspect of it, the good the bad attention to it compared to Kaepernick, he's really not that good of a player."

Meh, I can understand why they did it (veteran QB and all and familiar with the system already), especially since we got him at the league minimum, although it sucks that we lost Sloter over it because he looked awesome in the preseason. The Broncos were hoping he would clear waivers and then they could put him on the practice squad, but instead the Vikings signed him (for their practice squad I believe). Osweiller has a lot of crow to eat in this city and I wouldn't be surprised if he is booed soundly by the home crowd.

The internet never fails to impress and entertain me. This is too good. Obviously Osweiler got signed by the Broncos because he knows the system and is familiar with team. As for Kaepernick, he might not even be good enough to start in the NFL, and people are upset Osweiler went back to his old team.

Why would the Broncos open up their arms to the distraction of Kaepernick when there is no guarantee he even helps them win? Keep overreacting. I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

The whole world took notice on Sunday afternoon when, as his teammates sat out the national anthem, offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva stood alone at the entrance to the tunnel, hand over his heart.

The veteran Army Ranger, West Point graduate, and Bronze Star recipient had explained last season why he just didn't have it in him to sit out the anthem:

“I just know I'm very thankful to be an American. I will stand very proudly and sing every single line of the national anthem every single time I hear it. I will stop whatever I'm doing because I recognize I have to be very thankful to be in this country.”

But just one day after Villanueva stood alone, appropriately, at Soldier Field in Chicago, he issued an apology, saying he felt that he had — unintentionally, of course — thrown his teammates under the bus:

“I made Coach Tomlin look bad, and that is my fault and my fault only. I made my teammates look bad, and that is my fault.”

As a 10-year — and third-generation — Army veteran myself, I absolutely understand where Villanueva is coming from: you learn in your first days of Basic Training that doing your own thing can get you or your buddies killed in a hurry.

But I also respectfully (because come on, he outranks me and he's huge) disagree with his assessment of the situation. Alejandro Villanueva did not make his teammates look bad. They made him look bad.

Another thing we drilled during those first grueling days of training: LDRSHIP (yes, I know I spelled that wrong). The Army Values are as follows:

Loyalty

Duty

Respect

Selfless Service

Honor

Integrity

Personal Courage

Villanueva, in standing up for what he believed was right, exemplified every one of those values at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon.

He displayed loyalty, duty, and respect — to his country, to the men and women with whom he served, and to flag that stands for everything he signed up to fight for.

Selfless service — by standing when he knew that the popular thing, the thing that would likely earn him praise from the rest of his team, was to sit it out.

Honor, integrity, and personal courage — in doing what his heart told him was right even if no one else was willing to stand with him.

Villanueva has been playing football in Pittsburgh since 2015. His teammates know him. There is little doubt in my mind that at least a few of them knew of the statement he made last season regarding the anthem protests and that he would have a difficult time sitting it out.

They knew that he would be compelled to stand, and they let him step out of that tunnel alone. They did the very thing that Villanueva, as a Ranger, was trained not to: they left a man behind.

1) The Rockies are a baseball team, not football
2) There is no football team in the NFL that either has "Colorado" or "Rockies" in the name
3) Marcus Allen never played for any team in the state of Colorado

Fox Sports will no longer air coverage of the national anthem before its NFL games, the network said on Sunday in a statement to Sports Illustrated.

With the exception of the London matchup between the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints, Fox Sports plans to follow “standard procedure” and broadcast regionalized coverage without airing the national anthem. The network added, “However, our cameras are always rolling and we will document the response of players and coaches on the field.”

The decision was a shift from last week when Fox Sports broadcast the national anthems from games, Sports Illustrated reported.

NFL players continued to peacefully protest racial injustice this week in defiance of President Donald Trump, who called the demonstrators “sons of bitches” and said they should be fired from the league.

During the national anthem ahead of the London game, which Fox Sports did broadcast, the entire New Orleans Saints team kneeled before the music began, but stood for the entirety of the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Last week, nearly a dozen Saints players sat on the bench during the national anthem ahead of their matchup against the Carolina Panthers. When the Dolphins played the New York Jets, the entire team locked arms in a show of solidarity with the players who kneeled.

This week, three Miami Dolphins players kneeled while the rest of the team remained standing.

One of the kneeling Dolphins players was safety Michael Thomas, who fought back tears last week while responding to Trump’s harsh rhetoric.

“I got a daughter. She’s going to have to live in this world,” Thomas told reporters last week. “I’m going to do whatever I got to do to make sure she can look at her dad and be like, ‘Hey, you did something, you tried to make a change.’”

https://i.imgur.com/m4LVqhq.jpg

ESPN will pass on showing live player protests during Week 4 of the NFL season. The Disney-owned network told Sporting News it won't air the playing of the national anthem before Redskins vs. Chiefs on "Monday Night Football."

The NFL's TV partners normally do not show players before the unfurling of the American flag and singing/playing of the national anthem, except before the Super Bowl and other select games. But given viewer interest around players staging demonstrations last week, ESPN, Fox Sports, NBC Sports, CBS Sports, NFL Network and DirecTV all provided live anthem coverage during Week 3.

The networks did not show instances of NFL fans booing or screaming at protesting players. When ESPN showed the live playing of the anthem before the Cowboys' 28-17 win over the Cardinals on MNF last week, play-by-play announcer Sean McDonagh noted fans were booing, but ESPN didn't show them. Said McDonagh: "God Bless America."

But with the league seemingly trying to put protests during the national anthem in the rear-view mirror, ESPN will return to its normal coverage strategy this week.

"ESPN MNF will not carry the anthem live," spokesman Mac Nwulu told SN.

Fox split the baby, televising the national anthem before the Saints-Dolphins game in London but not showing it during regional games.

"As we have in previous broadcasts of NFL games from London, Fox will show the national anthem as well as 'God Save the Queen' live," according to spokesman Eddie Motl. "As is standard procedure, regionalized coverage of NFL games airing on Fox this Sunday will not show the national anthem live; however, our cameras are always rolling and we will document the response of players and coaches on the field.”

Prior the playing of the national anthem at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, the Saints took a knee as a team, then stood during the singing of the national anthem while three Dolphins players took knees. Fox's TV cameras showed hardly any of that. Fox returned from commercial just as the Saints were rising to their feet for the anthem. It wasn't until the halftime show that Fox showed a clip of Saints coach Sean Payton taking a knee with his players.

NBC Sports televised live the playing of the U.S. national anthem before its "Sunday Night Football" broadcast of Colts-Seahawks in Seattle. CBS Sports showed the anthem live before its game telecasts.

SPECIAL TO OUTKICK FROM ODDSSHARK

https://i.imgur.com/X9s1mXZ.jpg

The unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs have been steadily moving up the odds to win Super Bowl 52, as they now sit behind only the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers on those betting futures at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

The Chiefs, the only team in the NFL that has yet to suffer a loss heading into Week 6 of the season, are now the +650 third-favorites (wager $100 to win $650) on the Super Bowl 52 odds. Kansas City is set as a 5-point home favorite against the Pittsburgh Steelers in late-afternoon action on Sunday.

The Patriots continue to be the Super Bowl 52 betting favorites at +450, but Aaron Rodgers and the Packers have closed the gap on that top spot at +500 odds. New England was seen as a candidate to go 16-0 this season, but has already suffered two losses to sit at 3-2 heading into its Week 6 road game against the New York Jets.

The Packers are 4-1 on the season and will face the Vikings in Minnesota on Sunday afternoon.

Rounding out the top contenders on the latest odds to win Super Bowl 52 are the Seattle Seahawks and the Philadelphia Eagles both at +1000, and the Steelers and the Atlanta Falcons both at +1200. Atlanta is 3-1 on the season and seeking redemption after they blew a massive lead at Super Bowl 51 last February.

The Dallas Cowboys have stumbled to a 2-3 record to start the season, putting them third in the NFC East standings and back at +2000 on the Super Bowl 52 odds along with the Denver Broncos, who are 3-1 through four games. The Carolina Panthers are then at +2200, and there’s a gap from there with the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings both sitting at +3300.

Elsewhere on the list, after opening at +1600 the Oakland Raiders have dropped to +5000 on the Super Bowl 52 odds thanks to a 2-3 start and an injury to quarterback Derek Carr. The Los Angeles Rams have bounced from +10000 to +5000 on the futures list after starting the season a solid 3-2.

And with an ugly 0-5 record the New York Giants have plummeted from +1600 to +30000.

IT's going to be too hard to fully understand this game, but I'll start where it's easy...what is a Super Bowl and what teams do you guys go for?The 2 conferences play a 16 game season to determine who goes to the playoffs in each. Playoffs are a seeded single elimination tournament. The 2 conference champions meet for the so-called Superbowl to determine the overall champion.

11 players a side on the field. One unique aspect is that players play only offense or only defense, not both. There have been exceptions, but not many. So it is a completely different team on the field depending on who has the ball. The third group of players are "special teams" that handle kicking plays. There can be some overlap of players on special teams with offense and defense. For example, pass receivers may be designated to return kicks.

That's your starter... :)

PHILADELPHIA — Can we skip the hot seat and go straight to the pink slip? Sooner or later, Vance Joseph must go. John Elway hired the wrong coach for the Broncos.

There are 51 reasons Joseph should be fired immediately, and only one reason to keep him: There’s nobody on the current Denver staff that can fix this hot mess.

“I’m the head coach here, so it starts with me. I’ve got to fix this,” Joseph said Sunday, after a 51-23 defeat that ripped the heart out of the Broncos and eliminated what little hope remained for the remainder of this NFL season.

OK, let’s start with the uncomfortable fact the Broncos quit on their rookie coach during a blowout loss to Philadelphia that felt like a bad flashback to our worst Josh McDaniels nightmares.

“I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep going through losses like this, man. It’s breaking my heart,” said defensive end Derek Wolfe, a sixth-year pro who owns a Super Bowl 50 ring. “The whole time I’ve been here, we’ve been winning. We’ve always found a way to win. And this kills me.”

So maybe returning Brock Osweiler to the job as starting quarterback wasn’t such a great idea. His performance against the Eagles — two interceptions and a 53.4 quarterback rating — was more groan-worth than all those recent Brock-to-the-future puns. If the Broncos are really that desperate to recapture lost glory, does anybody have a phone number for Tim Tebow?

As it turns out, Gary Kubiak was ahead of the curve. Kubiak quit before this dysfunctional team made everyone in Broncos Country sick to watch. Sunday afternoons in Colorado are now better spent taking the dog for a long walk. What’s the next time fans need to check in? And with the eighth pick in 2018 NFL draft, Denver selects …

But let’s keep the discussion to the crisis at hand. Could Joseph possibly be more out of his depth? The last time the Broncos lost four consecutive games, the year was 2010, and the knucklehead on Denver’s sideline was doing a bad Bill Belichick impersonation. Although McDaniels never had a firm grip on his emotions, at least he had a clue with X’s and O’s.

So many things point to Joseph’s ineptitude that there aren’t enough fingers of blame to cover it all.

What has led to this team’s 3-5 record?

“The same stuff,” receiver Demaryius Thomas said.

Week after week, the the Broncos are a calamity of bad stuff. It stinks. And it doesn’t get corrected. That’s the definition of bad coaching.

Near the outset of an afternoon of endless misery, the Broncos were caught with 12 players on the field. In the final minute of the fourth quarter, they took a delay-of-game penalty, their last of 14 flagged infractions, because their punting unit was a man short.

Philadelphia gashed Denver’s overhauled run defense for 5.3 yards per carry and quarterback Carson Wentz sent four touchdown passes soaring into the wild blue yonder, piercing the soul of a secondary formerly known as the No-Fly Zone.

https://i.imgur.com/o3s84z9.jpg
Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler #17 has the ball knocked away for a fumble that is recovered by
center Matt Paradis #61 in the 3rd quarter

The Eagles began scoring early, with a seven-play, 75-yard explosion on an opening possession that ended with a glaring, red-rocket salute to receiver Alshon Jeffery in the end zone. And Philadelphia put the Broncos on full blast so often the home team’s official Twitter feed confessed to one embarrassing glitch at Lincoln Financial Field: “Apologies, we actually ran out of fireworks.”

Everything about the Broncos screams their head coach has lost this team. But if a photograph is worth a thousand words, here’s a scene that impeaches Joseph:

After Jay Ajayi made the Denver defense look as helpless as those pathetic pixels that digital Bo Jackson used to run over in Tecmo Bowl, scoring on a 46-yard touchdown run to put Philly ahead 31-9 late in the second quarter, linebacker Von Miller trudged to the sideline and sat on the Denver bench alongside 15 teammates, whose body language was broken and as bereft of passion as anything we’ve seen since Jay Cutler departed from Colorado.

Whatever Joseph told his team at halftime made zero impression. The Eagles took the kickoff to begin the third quarter and humiliated the arm tacklers on a half-hearted Denver defense with a 13-play, 77-yard drive that was 7 minutes and 28 seconds of undeniable proof the Broncos had quit on their coach.

“I told the team after the game that every man has to do a self-check,” Joseph said.

The team has no bigger problem than the man Joseph sees in the mirror.

But cheer up, Broncos Country. The NFL draft is 172 days away, which gives John Elway nearly six months to find a new quarterback for his next head coach.

I still look at the Broncos and wonder how they are only 2 years removed from winning the Super Bowl. Even though the Eagles shredded the defense, they are still one of the best defenses in the NFL. Sure, there are some injuries, but come on, every team goes thru injuries. We have 3 quarterbacks on the roster that aren't worth anything and we have a rookie head coach that is in WAY over his head. This past game was only the 10th time the Broncos have had 50+ points scored on them, and 7 of those 10 times happened when Denver was still in the AFL. Elway better do something and soon or he might find himself out of a job too, especially since he's the one ultimately responsible for this debacle :wha:

They were talking ownership also, I'll have to look that up. I knew that was happening when they dismissed Jack Del Rio.

The Eagles are the first-ever team to be a No. 1 seed in the playoffs and be a home underdog in its first playoff game, per David Purdham of ESPN.

That's what happens when you have a shitty backup quarterback replacing the guy that got you the number 1 seed.

I’m not saying the AFC title game was fixed for the Patriots, but holy shit that was some powerful home field advantage. The Jacksonville Jaguars were flagged six times for 98 yards while the Patriots were called once, for a holding penalty on a kickoff, for 10 yards. The last time any team was called for only one penalty in a playoff game?
955223352737697793
The Jaguars were called for two defensive pass interference penalties, one of which was embarrassingly soft: A.J. Bouye was penalized for hand-fighting with Brandin Cooks down the sideline toward a Tom Brady pass that looked uncatchable anyway.
955188757753421824
But the 32-yard penalty set the Patriots up for a touchdown two plays later. (The Jaguars had only been had been flagged for defensive pass interference five times in the entire regular season, the lowest in the NFL.) That touchdown sent that Patriots into the locker room down by four points instead of 11.

Then in the third quarter, Myles Jack made what should have been the play of the game when he stripped the ball from Dion Lewis as the two went to ground. Jack got up and took off down the wide open field toward the end zone. It would have given the Jaguars a three-score lead with under 14 minutes remaining. But the refs whistled Jack down by contact, even though the replay shows he wasn’t touched after he had full control of the ball and was clear of Lewis.
955203390983802880
A couple of missed pass interference calls on Marcedes Lewis in the fourth quarter, and at least one missed holding call on the Patriots late in the game, and that was that.

Jack, when asked about it the officiating and penalty discrepancy, said, per ESPN:

“Interesting. My thoughts on that is ... yeah, that’s kind of self-explanatory. I didn’t know that.

“I’ll just say that’s self-explanatory. Interesting. That’s all I’m going to say.”

“You all see it,” Bouye said. “I got players hitting me up in the NFL saying the same thing.” He also said Danny Amendola head-butted his teammate, Tashaun Gipson, right in front of the referees, seemingly trying to goad him into a penalty:

“I’m going to defend my teammates. You all see it on TV, the one where Amendola head-butted Gip. Right after the whistle was blown. Right in front of them. I’m just asking how you going to let them do that?

“I understand you’re all going to let us play, but we know they’re going to try to instigate stuff. They head-butted my man. C’mon, man.”

The refereeing is only part of the story—Doug Marrone’s decision to kneel with 55 seconds and two timeouts left before halftime was uninspiring, and the Jags’ inability to do anything expect grind out one-yard runs on basically every drive in the second half was frustrating. But watching the evil empire get all the calls again, while having to listen to Tony Romo gush over Brady for hours on end is enough to turn anyone into a conspiracy theorist. So squeeze whatever pleasure you can from tinfoil hatting this game:

I've been listening to the new Barstool Sports channel on XM. One guy asked if the Philly fans could possibly keep up this level of intensity for 2 more weeks.

The other guy said, "Listen, you're talking about a city that built a monument to a fictional sports character and still talk about it. I don't think they'll have any trouble keeping the intensity for an actual sports team.".

So, the Redskins pull of a trade with the Chiefs to acquire Alex Smith instead of negotiating with Kirk Cousins. Now that means that Cousins will most likely be released and allowed to become an UFA. The Broncos badly need a real QB on their roster.

I don't see why. Sure he can be good in the right system, but he's no Marino or Elway.

Sports categories on "Jeopardy!" can often be a weak spot for the contestants involved. On Thursday night, it was maybe the greatest Achilles' Heel in show history.

Not only did all three contestants miss on each of the five questions in the "Talkin' Football" category, they were so clueless about the sport that none of them even attempted to guess. Alex Trebek decided to have some fun with the situational ignorance once he realized how it was going to play out.
959221549663371265
Between Trebek's sarcasm/dry humor, the crowd straight-up laughing at the panel's lack of football IQ and the contestants just waiting for it all to be over, this was an incredible moment in Jeopardy! history. This was like the Super Bowl of not knowing football.
