You know Theo's methods... accept the lean years to build an amazing pipeline using heavy mathematical analytics. He's done just that, in this case focused on power hitting. They are deep with more of the same waiting in the wings. And it's reported that they just signed a Cuban phenom for an outfielder that had originally committed to the Giants.
The Chicago Cubs have made a splash in the international market by signing Cuban outfielder Eddy Julio Martinez, according to multiple reports.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Martinez, 20, reportedly had agreed to a $2.5 million contract last weekend with San Francisco but was believed to receive a $3 million deal with the Cubs.
Now add three game changing factors. 1) The coup that landed Maddon here. 2) The short term cash generated by large increases in advertising with the renovations (I hate the jumbotron but it makes money). 3) In 2020 the Cubs will have all media consolidated like the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers (I think) do. They may have there own broadcast network, maybe not, but the per game revenues from total media control are estimated to jump from $250k a game to over $1 Million.
They have become structured to compete at a high level for a very long time. They are just ahead of the schedule, but it's not a flash in the pan.
Speaking of the curse, Lance, I am curious if you know this.
When Billy Buckner infamously let the ball roll between his legs in the '86 series, he was wearing a Cubs batting glove under his first baseman's mitt.
Edit: found it.

1908 was their last World Series win. 1945 was the last time they made it to the World Series. And 2008 was the last time they were in the playoffs, and they were swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS. The Phillies went on to win that World Series, incidentally.

Not a bad game, they just couldn't get much going on Harvey. Both managers left the starters in too long.
Today is likely a must win though; they have to split in NY to have a reasonable chance. If Arrieta is on he's unhittable, but his last outing was not great against STL. The young Cubs got the first game out of their system and the bats should be a lot stronger tonight.

The Kansas City Royals have won the World Series, 4 games to 1. After being down 2 - 0, they game back and tied it in the 9th, then won it in OT by a score of 7 - 2 in the 12th.
Man that will be discussed for a long time. Up 2-0 going into the 9th, Collins decides to go to the closer (who has 2 blown saves already in the series), they tell Matt Harvey who gets riled up and protests to the pitching coach then to Collins. The crowd is chanting "We want Harvey!" Collins reverses himself, sends Harvey back out, the crowd go wild. First batter walk (ut oh); Harvey stays in. 2nd batter doubles; Harvey pulled. Both batters score, game tied. Mets lose in extra innings.

Lackey turned down a one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer from the Cardinals, who now receive a first-round draft pick as compensation for losing him to their NL Central rivals.
Lackey is coming off a fantastic season for St. Louis in which he logged 218 innings with a 2.77 ERA and 175/53 K/BB ratio. It was by far his best season since his prime with the Angels a decade ago, but combined from 2013-2015 he started 93 games with a 3.35 ERA and 500/140 K/BB ratio in 605 innings.
Chicago being in the market for rotation help beyond Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta and Lester is no surprise, but being able to add a playoff-caliber starter in Lackey without a huge long-term commitment has to be considered a win for Epstein and the front office.
And might I add. 8-5 in the playoffs with a 3.11 ERA.

Cubs sign Ben Zobrist to four-year contract, trade Starlin Castro for Adam Warren and PTBNL
The Chicago Cubs and infielder Ben Zobrist have agreed to terms on a four-year contract through the 2019 campaign. Zobrist, 34, has earned a pair of American League All-Star honors during his career spanning all or part of 10 seasons with Tampa Bay (2006-14), Oakland (2015) and Kansas City (2015). He is a career .265 hitter with a .355 on-base percentage and .431 slugging percentage, good for a .786 OPS. Zobrist has averaged 36 doubles, five triples, 17 homers, 77 RBI, 82 walks and 87 runs per 162 games of his major league career.
The Cubs also acquired right-handed pitcher Adam Warren and a player to be named from the New York Yankees in exchange for infielder Starlin Castro. Warren, 28, went 7-7 with three holds, one save, a 1.16 WHIP and a 3.29 ERA in 43 appearances with the Yankees last season, splitting time between the bullpen (1-1, 2.29 ERA in 26 appearances) and the starting rotation (6-6, 3.66 ERA in 17 starts).
Castro departs the Cubs a three-time All-Star and a career .281 hitter with a .321 on-base percentage, .404 slugging percentage and a .765 OPS in 891 major league games covering the last six big league seasons.

Joe Garagiola, a Major League Baseball legend who successfully moved from the field to the broadcast booth, has died at the age of 90, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced Wednesday. The cause of his death was unclear.
Garagiola entertained audiences for 58 years with a sharp sense of humor and a seemingly endless trove of stories. Popular with those who followed sports and those who didn't, his personality transcended games and landed him a pair of stints on the "Today" show, a slot as a guest host in Carson's seat on "The Tonight Show," spots as a game show host and almost a decade on Westminster dog show telecasts.
His longtime friend, Yogi Berra, died last year.
A 20-year-old rookie with the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in 1946 — he had more hits and RBIs in the seven-game matchup against Boston than Ted Williams — Garagiola spent nine seasons in the majors as a catcher. He was a career .257 hitter, then really became a star once he stopped playing.
Garagiola's first broadcast job was alongside the famed Harry Caray with the Cardinals. He later with Curt Gowdy and Vin Scully on NBC broadcasts, mixing in keen insights gleaned from his playing days along with funny stories he picked up along the way.
In 1991, he won the Ford C. Frick Award for baseball broadcasting excellence that earned him a permanent place in the Hall of Fame. He served as a part-time commentator for the Diamondbacks after his son, Joe Jr., was hired as the team's general manager.
During a retirement ceremony in 2013, Garagiola offered a sample of the tales that made him a part of the game's soundtrack for so long.
Garagiola recalled a pitcher "who will remain nameless" who threw only a fastball. But when Garagiola put down the sign for the fastball, the pitcher kept shaking it off. Finally, an exasperated Garagiola went out to the mound.
"I go out there and said, 'What do you want to throw?'" Garagiola recalled. "He said a slider. I said, 'You don't throw a slider.' He said, 'That's why I'll get him out, he won't be lookin' for it.'"
He remembered a time when Dusty Rhodes, known for his clutch hitting, came to bat. The fidgety pitcher, Cliff Stein, was concerned about how to work. "Dusty," Garagiola said, "was known to take a drink now and again."
"I said I don't care what you are going to throw," Garagiola said, "but don't hit him in the back pocket or we'll have Jack Daniels all over home plate."
For nine years, Garagiola worked on the telecasts of the Westminster dog show at Madison Square Garden in New York, taking an everyman's approach to the entries. A proud owner of Yorkshire terriers, Garagiola was parodied by Fred Willard on the mockumentary "Best in Show," an over-the-top portrayal that rankled the veteran announcer.
"Some people thought Joe didn't know about dogs, but he really did," longtime Westminster TV host David Frei said. "Nine times out of 10, he already knew the answer to the question he was asking me. He was just putting it in my wheelhouse."
"He was a real pro, he taught me so much about the business. He was a perfect partner," Frei said. "And he loved dogs."
Garagiola said his fondest memory was the 2001 season when the Diamondbacks, with his son, Joe Garagiola Jr., as the team's general manager, beat the New York Yankees in the World Series.
"Baseball, it hasn't changed that much," Garagiola said. "You still have to hit the ball and you still have to catch it. Good players will win and bad players will lose. Winners win and losers make excuses. It's as simple as that."

Make no mistake about it—this was the most challenging division to decide upon a winner.
It's easy enough to see that there are two very distinct tiers in the NL Central. There are the Chicago Cubs, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals. There's 50 feet of nothing, and then there are the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds.

Remember me? Righty stifles former club on milestone night
ST. LOUIS -- John Lackey joined a select group of pitchers who have beaten all 30 Major League teams, and he did so at one of his favorite ballparks to pitch in, Busch Stadium. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, he was pitching for the rival Cubs.
Lackey struck out 11 and held St. Louis to four hits over seven scoreless innings in Chicago's 5-0 win Monday night. He's now 12-4 in his career at Busch Stadium, which was his home turf from July 31, 2014, through last season.
...
The 37-year-old Texan is the only active pitcher who has accomplished the feat and the first since Tim Hudson did so on July 26, 2015. The list also includes Hall of Famer Randy Johnson and former Cubs Terry Mulholland, Jamie Moyer and Dan Haren. Al Leiter was the first to do it, back in 2002.
...
Lackey also became the 245th pitcher in Major League history with 2,500 or more innings -- he's third among active pitchers -- and he notched his 20th career double-digit strikeout game

That makes it far more difficult to achieve than a perfect game, and therefore, more rare. A perfect game isn't pure achievement alone. I bet every pitcher that ever had one would tell you that it's a total team effort with a huge dose of luck involved.
We could say that both feats are equal in terms of luck required.

A large price of metal hit me in the head/eye resulting in a fractured nose, 2 fractured orbital bones, and most significantly, the loss of vision in my right eye. I was immediately taken to the ER and then transferred to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 eye hospital in the world. That night, the doctors informed me that the damage to my eye was extreme and essentially that my eye had been crushed like a grape. The doctors told me they were going to do everything possible to reconstruct it but in all likelihood I would never regain sight in my right eye. The first surgery was somewhat a success but overall nothing had changed, so after discussions with my family and my doctors, it was decided that the best chance I had to live a normal life was to have my right eye removed and have a prosthetic one put in. This decision was not an easy one to make but to me it seemed like the right one so on Tuesday afternoon I went forward with the surgery. I'm currently still in Miami recovering from surgery but I'm doing well. This has been the hardest week of my life but I've had amazing support from my family and friends to help me get through it. For those who have been wishing me well, your support has not gone unnoticed and I appreciate everyone who has kept me in their thoughts and prayers. I had the best doctors in the world doing their best work on me and for that I am grateful as well. Although this injury has been tough it could have been much worse...I'm lucky to still have vision in my left eye...I'm lucky that i didn't have brain damage...and I'm lucky to be surrounded my the most loving and understanding people in the world. I just wanted to write this message to let everyone know that even though I suffered some bad luck, I'm not dead. I'm gonna be alright, I'm gonna persevere, and I'm gonna succeed. The Chicago White Sox suspended ace Chris Sale five days without pay for destroying collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear.
The White Sox announced the punishment on Sunday after Sale was scratched from his scheduled start and sent home the previous night.
The suspension comes to $250,000 of his $9.15 million salary. He was also fined about $12,700 — the cost of the destroyed jerseys — according to a person familiar with the penalty. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.
"Obviously we're all extremely disappointed that we have to deal with this issue at this time both from the standpoint of the club as well as Chris' perspective," general manager Rick Hahn said. "It's unfortunate that it has become this level of an issue and potential distraction taking away from what we're trying to accomplish on the field."
Sale was not expected at the ballpark on Sunday. He is eligible to return Thursday against the crosstown Cubs at Wrigley Field, though Hahn would not say if the left-hander would start that game.
The Major League Baseball Players Association declined comment, spokesman Greg Bouris said. Sale could ask the union to file a grievance.
FanRag Sports first reported Sale was protesting the 1976-style jerseys, which were navy and sported unusual collars on a hot and humid night.
Sale then cut up an unknown number of jerseys before the game and was told to leave the stadium. With not enough usable 1976 jerseys available, the White Sox wore white throwback uniforms from the 1983 season.
The incident comes with the White Sox in a tailspin after a 23-10 start and Sale's name circulating in trade rumors.
"The actions or behaviors of the last 24 hours does not change in any aspect, any respect, our belief that Chris Sale can help this club win a championship and win multiple championships," Hahn said. "It does not move the needle one iota in terms of his value to this club, his value to any other club that may be interested in his services or the likelihood of him being moved or kept whatsoever. None of that stuff is impacted at all by these events."
This wasn't the first flare-up involving 27-year-old Sale, who is known for his competitive streak and strict training regimen.
He was openly critical of team executive Ken Williams during spring training when he said Drake LaRoche, the son of teammate Adam LaRoche, would no longer be allowed in the clubhouse. Adam LaRoche retired as a result, and Sale hung the LaRoches' jerseys in his locker.
He was also suspended five games by Major League Baseball last season for his role in a brawl at Kansas City that started with a flare-up between teammate Adam Eaton and the Royals' Yordano Ventura. Sale went to the Royals clubhouse after he got tossed and was seen pounding on the door.

Wow....the Cubs sure did give up A LOT to rent Aroldis Chapman for a few months.

Yeah, I am not too sure about this... but they need him and the farm system is stacked. I trust Theo and Joe. The sports radio anarchists won't like it.

Anytime you give up your top prospect to rent a player....that's just hard to stomach. The BoSox have done it more than once in their history and rarely did it ever work out even remotely well
I drank the Theo and Joe Kool-Aid. I am double stroking them waiting for my World Series bukakke.

I keep thinking back to when the Sox needed a reliever and they pulled the trigger on the Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson trade. Good thing Bagwell never made anything of himself when he went to the Astros.

A-Rod's being released by the Yankees. He's retiring. His last game will be on Friday.

So CWS pitcher Chris Sale was AGAIN going for win #15. And AGAIN, closer David Robertson blows the save. But get this. Todd Frazier jacks a 3-run homer in the top of 10. And since Robertson was the pitcher of record at the time of the home run, he becomes the winning pitcher for the game.
Wow.
Blown save, fuck your teammate AGAIN, and you're the winning pitcher. Wierd-ass rule.

Prince Fielder's retiring due to medical issues that doctors are saying will prevent him from playing. He had two spinal fusions in his neck, so yeah... he's done.
Sad way to end a career.

Better than A-Rod.
Also, Cubs 9 straight wins and 30 games over .500 at 71 and 41. Run differential +186. Washington is the only other team over 100 at +133.
:faint: And that was from the heat and humidity tonight. Went to the game. Afterward it was STILL 90F and humid. But what a game it was.
Yes the Cubs won, but if you are a baseball fan, this was a fun one to watch.
My fave clips are...
Coghlann asking for time, being denied it, then slapping a single to score a run. :faint: http://m.cubs.mlb.com/chc/video/v1039348883/stlchc-coghlan-asks-for-time-rips-a-tworun-single
Ross' 2-out bunt. what?! http://m.cubs.mlb.com/chc/video/v1039361483/stlchc-ross-drops-down-a-bunt-to-score-heyward
Carpenter gets nailed at the plate and tagged in the fucking face. :haha: http://m.cubs.mlb.com/chc/video/v1039391783/stlchc-coghlan-russell-throw-out-carpenter
Chapman retires the side on THREE PITCHES. http://m.mlb.com/chc/video/topic/10025790/v1039622883/stlchc-chapman-retires-side-with-just-three-pitches/?c_id=chc
Rizzo takes a Walk-off walk to win it in the 11th. :fu: http://m.mlb.com/chc/video/topic/11493214/v1040850083/must-c-conclusion-cubs-win-on-walkoff-walk/?c_id=chc

I have no issue with Chapman. Baez went full retard on the relay.

I dont watch sports in general. Football, baseball, basketball could all stop tomorrow and I would not notice. I watch "extreme sports" like skatboarding, freestyle bmx and freestyle motocross and auto racing. thats about it.

Since when is riding a skateboard or a bike in any fashion considered "extreme sports"? There's barely anything extreme about them.
Going down a really steep mountain on a bike? Sure, but half pipe, racing, and freestyle? Absolutely not. I wouldn't even call those huge downhill jumps extreme.
And baseball's the bomb. :slap:
