have you seen the 2014 Toyota Corollas Goof? the new toaster/appliance car??

I'm driving one next week

I passed one of those today. Him and some guy in a new Honda were racing. Slow tards, GTFO.

I kid Hal, get whatever makes you happy bro, and rock it like a new mullet.

You guys seem to forget that the Japs don't need a massive engine block to make it go quickly ;) Fuel economy is pretty much all that matters over here anyway what with our fuel costing a billion quid per quart :(

Not forgetting anything. I know you don't need 5plus liters to go fast, but anything with about 3000lbs and less than 150hp, is slow. Period. TBH, driving style, weight and aerodynamics have more to do with fuel efficiency than motor size any more.

The best thing I can recommend to anyone trying to get better fuel economy is keep up with maintenance, and get a vacuum gauge. Learn to drive with the highest amount of vacuum you can maintain.

My wife's car has a 2.4l turbo, about 285hp, weight is about 3,100lbs, and gets 30 mpg at 75mph. My old Z28, had a 5.7l, about 350hp, and got 29mpg at 70mph.

the new Corolla has a CVT in it, first time for Toyota....so the transmission will sound like it's going through 6 gears, while still pulling the car along at 140 hp

they finally caught up to the 21st century and put some stuff in the cockpit and the overall ride is supposed to be comfy along with large cabin space....so that's what I'm looking for.

drove the 2013 Civic last week and felt a lil cramped in it and low ...(and Asian 8-[ )

The Mazda Speed 3 is very quick for a small car. May be out of your budget though.
Perhaps a bit of a warning for the Corolla. It's a new design for the model year, AND it has a new never before used transmission? And you're worried about dependability?

they're all around 23 to 25 thousand by the time you're done up here....Mazda 3 wasn't any worse than the Civic..

yeah the Corolla is going to be a gamble, but underneath it all they still use the same engine that they've used since Frankie Goes to Hollywood

I'm opting for the LE CVT trim, which is just the 1.8 liter 132 hp, dressed up as a 140 hp...

I may have to settle for a Civic as they have a firm, stable ride and nice handling despite the Oopma Loompa sitting position...

Frankly I'm confused and nervous right now...already have my car sold anytime I want and just want something new settled in the next week

Speed 3 is a different engine than regular 3. It's the closest competitor to my wife's car, at least it was in 09 when I bought the Caliber SRT4 for her.
The Speed 3's start at 24 something stateside, so I'm sure that's just out of your budget. I've ridden in a couple, and they are very nice. Only thing the SRT4 does better is straight line acceleration.
Here's the Speed 3:
http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=modelsMain&vehicleCode=MS3

Whatever you get, I hope it makes you happy. Anymore, a new vehicle is about the second biggest purchase folks make.

08-30-2013, 09:41 PM
yeah I understand...we have a Mazda 3 and a Mazdaspeed 3

I drove the first one, which still had some jam.....I'm not really a driver Kev. I just do an end to end commute of the city daily and I can't go over 70km per hour most places anyways because of traffic

still would be nice to have a larger interior, with some speed and handling too. I'd have to get up into the 30-40 thousand range for a nice buggy like that...

read about some crossover SUV's, pretty much a large car or small SUV depending on how you look at it. Mazda makes a nice one (CR-5?) And I wanted the Ford Escape...until I heard they blow up and start on fire and shit

KevinD

It's all cool bro. I have friends that just view cars as basic transportation too. I still try to get them in as nice a car as they car afford. I don't currently have a Hotrod really, so I get my kicks with my wife's little turbo car. Seriously considering an aftermarket PCM for it that brings the HP to about 310 and eliminates some of the other annoying things Dodge has in the programming. 300ish hp in that car should get it into the mid 13's in the 1/4 mile. Just enough to really have some fun with the stock Mustang/Camaro/ Challenger V8 cars.

in almost every compact car I've researched...they all have computer assisted everything ...I was looking at a Subaru Imprezza, which is an AWD drive car...and I guess the traction assist comes on so strongly when guys go down hills, that the car starts braking...without braking and without consent from the driver

even the pokey Corolla has so much steering assist that the guys test driving them for reviews say it's like driving a marshmallow while wearing baking mitts  no tactile steering feel at all...

makes a guy miss the old days :sad2:

people laugh at my Pontiac...but for 140 hp it goes when I need it. I sometimes drive at 120 or 130 km per hour...just to stretch my legs

took a brown co-worker out for a drive in my car today...he's driving a 2000 Corolla now....and I saw his eyes light up when my pontiac scooted off from a stop...

I've had my wife's car up to 130mph, but wasn't comfortable in it. According to SRT, it's capable of 155mph. I've never, ever liked front wheel drive cars or the way they handle. I grew up driving moderate to high HP rear wheel drive cars and trucks and am much more comfortable in the handling at the limit with said.

My sis in law had a Grand Am, a bit older than yours, but same basic car. Had a V6 in it. It was nice for what it was.

Unfortunately due to work )and thirst) i can do neither  Played well tonight though........... well, my scoring was good, doubles not so much! Won 2-0 with two 19 dart legs. First leg i had a dart for 15, second leg i had 113 left after 9 darts so could have been a damn sight better! First county game of the season is this saturday though so a good warm up :)

No seasonal allergies since 2007  I learned a potent midbrain technique to add to my meditations, and allergies have been a thing of the past. KevinD
09-10-2013, 01:21 PM
Not much. Back at the shop today, but have to head home early to get my truck inspected. Texans squeaked one by the Chargers. I'm sure the Charger fans are all upset about that penalty on the Field goal try. I'll be honest, I'd never heard of that rule either.

Teh One Who Knocks
09-10-2013, 01:23 PM
No idea, that game was on past my bedtime.

KevinD
09-10-2013, 01:30 PM
Technically, mine too. Highlights: first play, Texans throw an interception, leading to a Charger TD. Rest of the half was downhill from there. At one point, Chargers up 28 to 7. Somehow, Texans defense shut down the Chargers in 2nd half, and squeaked out a 31 to 28 win with the go ahead Field goal in the last 4 seconds of game.

Yeah, still raining, not quite as hard as it has been so far today though. It was pouring down again yesterday though. Posted a rain total map in the weather thread that shows the amount of rain we've gotten in the area over the last 5 or 6 days.
