I didn't like the fact that Samsung screwed me with the phone when I tried to get it fixed. Nothing wrong with the phone itself.

Goofy
10-23-2015, 12:23 PM
Only thing I don't like is the lack of an sd slot, other than that it's fine :) Also, Samsung have a new program that's taken over from kies so transferring everything from the old phone to this took no time at all :D

Teh One Who Knocks

Yeah, HTC has a tool that makes transferring things a breeze, love it. Plus there's a slot for you SD card on the HTC

Loooong story....

My dad hasn't been feeling well for almost a week now, blamed it initially on food poisoning. He's been staying up in his room mostly, hardly coming out except to shuffle off to the bathroom. We tried to talk him into letting us take him to the doctor over the weekend, but he refused and we really weren't aware how bad he was feeling. Finally he agreed on Monday evening to allow us to take him to the doctor, so the g/f stayed home from work to take him. Since he doesn't have a primary doctor because he never goes, she took him to a walk-in clinic. They were alarmed at his vitals and how we was behaving (g/f said he was in awful shape, had a hard time even getting him to the doctor). So they called the paramedics and off to the emergency room he went. The g/f let me know what was going on, so I left work to head to the hospital. When I got there he was still in the ER side of the hospital in one of the trauma rooms. He looked so frail and worse than I have ever seen him look. :( They took him away for more tests, told us to go home for awhile and come back later, by then he would be in the intensive care unit. So we go back and he's starting to look a little better, but he's still not anywhere close to himself.

Seems he had some kind of problem with his kidneys, when they drained his bladder he had almost 2 liters of urine backed up in his system. There was a test that came back positive for a possible heart problem, and late last evening they finally got him in to do an MRI and they found that he has also had another stroke within the last few days, the doctors think it was caused from dehydration. he's acting terribly confused and all he can basically say right now is yes and no. I dunno what I am going to do if I lose my dad. Or even worse, if he has now come to a point in his life where he can no longer take care of himself, which, if there isn't drastic improvement in the next few days, that actually looks like what will end up being the best case scenario at this point. :(

Teh One Who Knocks

Thanks mate. We just don't know what to do at this point, we feel completely helpless. The latest news tests-wise was, they had the cardiologist examine him last night before we got there for the final evening visit, and although the initial test came back positive for some possible heart problem, the cardiologist said his heart was in good condition all things considered. They're more worried about possible long term kidney damage and they think the back-up in his system causing all that urine to not come out may have to do with his prostate. The bigger problem now is how much damage the stoke has caused and hopefully it gets better, because like I said, last night he was acting all confused and could only say yes and no. We all went to see him last evening and he couldn't remember the step-kids name when we were there (the nurse asked him who she was) and later after we were home, the ICU nurse called to ask a few more questions (because it was a new nurse after their shift change) and she told me that he couldn't remember the g/f's name and he couldn't remember my brother's name.

Not a doctor but the dehydration and kidney problems can actually be part of the bowels not working either. Prostate is number one cause but from personal experience, when one part of your body is not functioning, a lot of other systems suffer as well. My Dad is like your Dad Lance...they're too stubborn to admit there's a big problem until it gets worse. Mine had an ECG and the doc asked him - So are you aware you've had a series of mini-heart attacks? Hospital is best place for him and all you can do is wait for the doctors to do their thing

Assisted living takes a lot of forms....you can hire people to come to your house part time. Don't think he has to stay in a home 24/7. And if that is the progression, while hard, it's the best choice. I hate the place my Mom is at, but they ensure she takes her medication, keeps her oxygen on and they bathe and dress her if necessary. And if something real serious is to happen, she's in a place with 7 floors of medical care 24/7. I beat myself up thinking my complaints were the catalyst for putting my Mom in a home...sometimes no matter how shitty, no matter how expensive, no matter how lonely you think your loved one will be, it's light years better than something serious happening in your home...imagine if your Pa had a problem and you didn't know how to handle it, or what you tried to do only made him worse? Those are the unforgivable things. 24/7 care may be his next step and if it is, try to understand it's likely the best step.

He looks confused and frustrated when you try and talk to him and all he is still basically saying is yes and no. He looks so frail, he doesn't look like my dad at all lying there in the hospital bed. :(

They were stuck because they couldn't give him the anti-stroke meds because of the kidney problems that were going on at the time. By the time they got his system all drained out, the nurse said he had almost 5 litres of urine backed up in his system.

But at this point, unless there are drastic improvements, I don't know if he will ever be coming back home to live with us, not if he can't take care of himself. Like Hal mentioned in his post, a 24 hour care facility, as hard as it would be to put him there, and as much as I know that he will resent it and us for putting him there, in his current condition, it will be the best place for him.

It's just hard to even think that way though, we just want him to come home. :(

Sorry to hear Lance. I know it sounds trite but it reinforces the saying about living life while you can, as much as possible...because you never know when something like this can happen to anyone.

We kept my Mom at home for six years and we were told later that was probably about four years too long. My Dad couldn't let go of his lifelong partner of 60 years...and she was horrible to him. Telling him to leave the house, not to touch her, not to advise her about health things...at 8pm at night she would literally look him in the eye while being really angry and say - Don't you have a home to go to??? Leave here now!!! I thought if I quit my job I could help my Dad look after her. I was wrong...

You already know this. If he leaves you and goes to a care facility, it's for him, not you. :(

Just had two calls from the hospital, one asking me insurance questions (that I don't have the answers to) and another asking about the mental and physical state of my dad prior to his hospitalization. Because of the second call, I have to go straight to the hospital after work. Because my dad has no living will, power of attorney, etc in place, I have to sign paperwork to be the proxy decision maker in case things really get bad. Not looking forward to this and this is way more than I want to be dealing with at this time, but thinking that way makes me feel selfish. :(

And because of the first call, I need to try and find which Medicare coverage my dad has and get back with the hospital because I guess if he only has Part A it won't cover rehab and blah blah blah....I don't know the first thing about doing all of this. :(

He needs you Lance, that's why you're going to do this. Today, get all of the numbers you need for medicare etc and maybe try to call some before you leave work. Tell them the situation and they'll likely be able to help with his information. Maybe ask for tomorrow off from work. You need time alone to sort through the information and trying to handle it from work isn't easy.

It's going to be tough but he needs your help right now. There's people at the hospital that have been through this situation before. They can advise you as to what you need to do and what they need from you. You can't help the will thing but his medical coverage is on file and you being his son and cohabitor should give you access to everything you need to find out.

He still can't move the right side of his body and he is having trouble speaking, but he looked so much better. They were even talking about transferring him today to another hospital where they will be doing the rehab to try and get him back on his feet. That of course is still the big unknown, whether he will be able to take care of himself again or not. But at least for right now, he's looking better. We went back to the hospital again last night to see him again and he was back in his bed. It's hard just hanging out in the room because he isn't talking and when you do try and converse with him, he either struggles to talk and then gives up or only answers yes or no still, but I know he likes having us in the room with him at the very least. We were getting ready to leave yesterday and I went over to his bedside and he took my hand and squeezed, I told him I loved him and he didn't want to let go and he started to cry. I almost lost it right there :( Breaks my heart to see him like this, he's always been so strong, but I had to be the strong one for him. I told him to get some rest and we'll see him again today.

They are limited with what they can do rehab-wise they told us, he needs a more intense form of rehab than they offer. Also, for the first time, money has become an issue. because he only has Medicare Part A, he isn't covered for outpatient rehab which is what thsi would be considered, even though he will be staying at the hospital. So, they found a sister hospital in their network willing to take him in on an 'indigent' basis, so it shouldn't cost him anything. Which is good news because there is no way that we can afford what this would cost. I'm guessing just his stay this week at this first hospital will run somewhere close to $100K if not more, so hopefully Medicare covers it all. We too are surprised they are sending him off this fast too, especially considering how bad he looked just less than 2 days ago.

As for the initial cause, they are almost certain it was an enlarged prostate that caused everything to back up and then everything else happened in a domino effect.

Thanks guys :)

We still have to decide what we will be doing after rehab, and now it's become more of an issue because the rehab hospital called and left a message for me yesterday saying they need to know our plan for my dad after he is discharged from rehab. How the hell can we come up with a plan when we don't even know what his condition will be when he's done? :wha: If he can take care of himself, then he will definitely be coming home, but if he needs care, we can't bring him home, neither me or the g/f have that kind of time or luxury to be able to stay home with him all day. Our house is 2 floors (3 if you count the basement) and if he can't at least go up and down the stairs from the ground level to the 2nd floor by himself, then there's no way we can have him at home because he would need constant supervision.

And exactly, we have no idea how he will respond to rehab. If he can't get a good portion of control back on the right side of his body, he can't be left alone.

I dunno, we assumed he was still at the local hospital and were planning on going down to see him, but when I finally made it home yesterday, there was a message on the house phone saying they transferred him to the other hospital to the other side of town, easily an 90 minute drive in traffic on a Friday evening. We're going to try and get down there today after I get home from work and shower and clean up.

Thanks mate, we hope so too. Hopefully in the next few days we will be able to see how his progress is going and that will help decide where he will be after rehab.

Actually, the pub is off the menu this weekend, ordered a couple of christmas presents this week plus tickets for Chris Cornell in april so my wallet is begging for mercy
