A rush job for our biggest customer came in last Thursday (the 12th) and they needed it to be finished by yesterday/today at the latest. This is our biggest customer. Well, for some reason this particular customer uses a code for what kind of material they specify on their drawings. So, instead of specifying, for example, aluminum plate for a two inch thick part, they spec it out as ALP2 on the drawing. And the codes get more complicated depending on the material (plate, tubing, flat bar and steel, aluminum, alloy, plastics, etc). I was in a hurry when I launched the job and ordered the material. I though I saw ALP2 but in reality it said DLP2 which is Delrin which is a type of plastic, NOT aluminum. And of course no one caught the mistake until yesterday, when the job was almost fully completed, a total of 70 fairly complicated parts. So, we wasted the money on all that aluminum and all the time into making the parts. PLUS we will be late on the order now. :|

Some kind of automation machinery, couldn't tell wou what it does though. We even tried to see if the customer would take them made from aluminum. Nope, has to be acetal plastic.

Yeah, scrap price is ridiculous. I think those bars of aluminum were around $3/lb when I ordered them and scrap value for aluminum is somewhere around $.15/lb :|

Yea, it's horrible how much all metals have tanked. Aluminum and copper used to be high enough to make a decent buck off scrap.

Scrap steel is even worse. We have one of those HUGE scrap bins (basically a roll-off) in the back for steel scrap. When it's full, and it can easily hold a couple of tons I would imagine, the shop gets a check for between $.50 and $1 after they haul it away.

Yeah, they haul it away and swap out the bins for free, and depending on the price of scrap steel, we get that huge check. Sometimes though if the price of scrap steel is low enough, we don't get anything.

Ah....so far. My boss seemed to be in a fairly decent mood towards me on Friday, even when discussing it. I was able to find the right kind of plastic in town that we needed (a minor miracle in itself, Denver is NOT an industrial city and finding material here in town is usually quite a chore). So the machinist started on the remake parts on Friday and must have worked a portion of the weekend because he is almost done with the 34 pieces that they customer had to have on Friday. So all told we'll be one business day late. Could have been a lot worse.

Tomorrow. My uncle Mike's taking mum and dad through to Edinburgh RI just now (i popped home early for lunch to wish dad well and see them off). A few last tests today then operation tomorrow - we won't get to see him tomorrow so i'm as well working rather than sitting at home worrying. I've taken wed/thurs/fri off so i can take my mum through to visit each day :)

All going according to plan he'll be out within 7 to 10 days then it'll just be a case of taking it real easy until he's fully healed (probably be a couple of months as they'll be cracking his ribcage open).

Installing a new SSD on one of the older PC's here at work trying to extend it's life. Already have the RAM maxed out in it. PC was slow as fuck, but first boot after re-installing Windows and some software took 22 seconds versus like 3 minutes :lol:

I think maybe I should upgrade my work PC to an SSD next. The other shop computer I did yesterday is blazing fast compared to what it used to be like.

It's so stupid how slow a regular HDD is when you compare the two. My PC is okay most of the time, but it takes a good 3 to 4 minutes for it to boot up and be "usable". And it's not even all that old, maybe 18 months.

Yeah :tup: Most likely going for a rescue dog, something that's house trained and probably on the smaller side (unfortunately :lol: ). Its more to keep my dad company and give him a reason to get out of bed in the morning. With his MS its all too easy for him to just laze around all day - Tony made a massive positive difference in that regard :)

Yeah, the shelter or a rescue group is always the best way to go. And small-ish is okay, as long as it's not a Chihuahua or a teacup poodle :lol:
