That's the generic point of view, but there's lots of little consequences in people's lives... particularly for civil service employees.

It keeps my mother from flying to my brother's place in NY to help him with his kids this week as was planned for the past 2 months. My brother has two boys and just went through a vicious divorce from his batshit crazy wife. He can't afford to take off from his job and his kids have off from school this week. My mother works for military law enforcement and if the government shuts down, her leave is cancelled and she can't go to help him. If she goes, she gets listed as AWOL and faces administrative discipline. If the government shuts down, she has to go to work on Monday without pay to find out if she's getting furloughed (again, she can't skip this), missing her flight on Sunday. I can't go because my brother's house is inaccessible and there's no way I could take care of the things I need to do to take care of myself. My sister can't go because she's slammed with work in her business. We have no one else we can rely on.

Things are more complicated than they seem. My family's case is one instance. I guarantee you there are worse situations all across the nation. Thinking of taxes alone is shortsighted. People's lives are seriously effected. The civil service employees that are furloughed get sent home without pay. For however long the furlough lasts, they can't pay their bills. Don't forget gentlemen, civil service employees pay taxes too, but they also have bills to pay. If they don't work, they don't get paid.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention... if the government shuts down, Congress still gets paid.
